My 5 Year Pub-iversary

On February 8, 2013 my very first novel was published.

At the time I was contracted with the fabulous small publishing company, Secret Cravings Publishing.  Very excited, and a very unseasoned author.

Thankfully, through SCP I had some great mentors, supporters, and fellow authors braving the waters.

The past 5 years have been a whirlwind of ups and downs. I spent time writing thousands upon thousands of words, and spent months upon months unable to write a word. I’ve had months with sales beyond belief and months where I didn’t sell a single book. I branched out into self-publishing with a few small gambits, but then my publisher closed their doors and I had to dive in full-force.

Some days it’s truly hard to believe that it’s been five years. How much my life has changed. How much my goals have changed. How much I’ve first lost, and then re-found my love for this world.

These days I’m keeping crazy-busy in my personal life, but also in writing.  I pulled all 6 of my original Dominion Falls Series books, the first books I published, last year.  I’ve revised, revamped, and added words to the books.  Now I’m re-publishing them. Getting back to my roots, and sending these books back out into the world, with a new little novella added on for good measure.

The next book in The Tribe series, which will be book 5 “The Child” is written and with the editor, due for release in July.

My best friend & co-author, Mary Terrani, and I finally released our book to the world, Escaping Humanity (The Exceptionals 1). We are in the middle of book 2, looking forward to a release at the end of the year, first of next. We’re also working with a fabulous artist to turn the book into a graphic novel.

I’m working to try to create a new cover for Masked Hearts so that I can re-release it in September.

I have notebooks with plans for new books, new series, more books in my existing series.

I went to my first conference as a signing author recently, and did well, and had so much fun.

I’m excited to continue doing what I love, and bring more stories into the world.  I’ve had to revamp my views on my publishing career, what I want to do, and where I want to go with it. I’d become too sensitive to the numbers and to the “you should” and “you shouldn’t” voices and lost my way.

I feel good coming home to my characters again.  I hope you’ll come on in and pull up an armchair, grab a book and join me. Get lost in one of my worlds for a while.  They are fun, dangerous, mysterious, romantic, sweet, and spicy. You’ll be able to find something for your personal taste with me.

As You Close Your Doors – A Note To and About Secret Cravings Publishing

In July of 2012 I was a little bit tired.

After seven years of trying this publishing gig, I had all but given up hope. Five years on my first series and a little over two on my second had worn me down.

scpaSecret Cravings Publishing took a chance on me, they offered me a contract on Changing Tracks in July of 2012. My book saw the published light of day in February of 2013 and even received an honorable mention RONE award.

Seventeen books later and I am still proud to say I am an SCP author.

I have met some fabulous people that I call friends. I have met some skilled people that have taught me many things. I have met an editor that I will hold on to with all my might until I near that “Misery” level of stalking (at which point I will apologize and slink away).

Mostly, I have had a publisher that has had my back, has answered my questions quickly, has worked the trenches with me, and always kept its authors informed. In this sometimes messy world of publishing, every single one of those things is so important.

Yesterday SCP’s owner, Sandy, posted a message to us all to let us know she was, effective September 1st, closing Secret Cravings doors.

It was a heartbreaking message for her, and for us authors. Of course, we will be sad to see our books taken down, but they can be restored.  What will be missed is the support of the staff, the community of authors, and the stability of a house that communicated with us at every turn.

Secret Cravings has been a great house to work for. I haven’t had a bit of complaint in my dealings with them. I know many others that haven’t been able to say the same about where they’ve been.

I can only hope that in my further endeavors in the publishing world I can find a house as good.

Thank you, SCP for taking a chance on me.

Tuesday Tales – Ring – Stars, Strips & Motorbikes

autumnWelcome back to Tuesday Tales!  This weeks prompt is Ring.

Back to Stars, Stripes & Motorbikes.  After an encounter that had Autumn pushing Linc away, he took a step back. A few days later, he’s having lunch with Calli (sister of the hero in Stalled Independence, and whose own book, Luck of the Cowgirl is due out in March):

Linc tried his best to ignore the stare of the woman across from him, but she was relentless. After he’d finished his food and pushed aside his plate, he gazed out the window of the diner. The blonde continued her silent, intense vigil. He sighed. “What is it, Calli?”

“So what are you doing here? I mean, it’s been a few weeks and you’re not showing any sign of moving. So what is it?”

“Go ahead, ask the easy questions.” He chuckled and leaned his forearms on the table. “I don’t know, Calli. I needed a break from what I was doing.”

“And then came here and did it anyway. Clay told me you were helping out Hailey. You want to try again?”

“I really don’t know.” He rubbed his hands over his hair. “I had to move on, go somewhere else. I thought maybe I’d find somewhere along the way.”

“Somewhere to what?”

“I don’t fucking know.”

“So you haven’t found it yet.” She almost sounded disappointed.

“I don’t know.”

“Oh my gawd, stop saying that.”

“Well, I don’t.” He laughed and ducked the fry she threw his direction. “I don’t want to disappoint my parents, but I just don’t think what I’m looking for is back home.”

“I’m sure Sally Dawson is so disappointed.” Calli’s mention of his long-ago ex didn’t help his restless mood. They’d dated in high school, but he’d broken up with her senior year after he signed up for the Army. He couldn’t count the number of ‘I’ll wait for you’ letters he got during his whole time in service.

“Boy is she ever.” Linc shook his head and leaned back. He draped his arms across the back of the booth. “I didn’t even try to give her any hope when I got home. No dates, no phone calls. That girl is crazy-persistent.”

“You’ve got the crazy part right.” Calli twirled a thumb near her temple and rolled her eyes around in circles, sticking her tongue out to elaborate her point.

Linc snorted. “Nice.”

“Am I wrong?”

“I wish I could say you were.”

“Trust me, that girl is nuts. I was on the receiving end of her wrath because I dared to be friends with you and joke around. Good thing I don’t pay much attention to smear campaigns, and I had my own problems at the time.”

“If I’d known I would have put a stop to it.”

“Pfft.” Calli waved off his comment. “It’s the past, and I’m not worried about it any longer. I mean, can you believe that was a decade ago?”

“Don’t say that.” Linc groaned. “You make me feel old.”

She leaned in and whispered, “A decade. Ten full years.”

“You’re an ass.”

“I know.” She giggled. Once she’d straightened, she kicked his shin until he met her gaze. “So what’s up with Autumn?”

“Nothing.”

Whether he’d said it too quick, or she simply didn’t believe him, he couldn’t be sure. Either way, she pursed her lips. “Liar. What’s going on? You haven’t been over there in days.”

“That’s because nothing is going on. She’s not interested.”

“Bull crap. That doesn’t ring true.”

He raised his brows. “She accused me of insinuating myself into her life because I was trying to help out. She wants nothing to do with a soldier, retired or not.”

“That’s because Grady—”

“Don’t you dare tell me!” He’d sounded harsh enough to make her eyes widen. He fidgeted in his seat. “Sorry. She doesn’t want to tell me and I’m not going to sneak around to find out what happened.”

“Oh, Linc. You’re hopeless. You like her.”

“Sure I do.  She’s sexy as hell, she’s funny, she knows her way around a garage.”

“Pig.”

“What? A girl grease monkey is hot.” He chuckled. “Let’s just say what little I know about her, I like. She never let me in enough to know if I could really like her more.”

“So? Go for it.”

“She doesn’t want me to. When she wasn’t outright protesting, I was more than willing. I asked her out probably ten times.” He shook his head, remembering their last encounter. The suggestion he was forcing himself in where he wasn’t welcome was enough to make him take a step back. “Whatever happened to her, she isn’t ready. I want to date her, not be her counselor.”

“You’re just giving up?” Her lower lip stuck out in an adorable pout. “What a shame. If Dee had done that with me…well, I’d be a lot more lonely.”

“I’m not lonely. I have a crazy, loony friend right here in front of me, a more sane one back at the shop. Who knows, maybe I’ll get back on the bike and head out west again.”

“You want to just pack up and leave again? Would that make you happy?”

“Don’t kick me for saying it again, but I don’t know.” He grunted when she kicked him anyway. “Stop that.”

“Now you’re just being a smartass. What about settling down? A family?”

“I guess I’ll find those things when I’m ready for them.” Truthfully, he thought he’d found a good place to settle down. He wasn’t so sure he was ready to take off again.

“Hm.” The arrival of their shakes interrupted Calli’s suspicious hum.

Line dove into his shake to avoid further interrogation. Much to his chagrin, she didn’t let him go so easy.

“So you don’t like it here, then?”

“No, I do.” He played with his straw. “You know, you’re worse than my mom.”

“I am not. She’d be relentless.” She flushed under his pointed glance. “I’m your friend, and I like it when you’re happy. I like it better when you’re nearby. You were never meant for Camden anyway.”

“And Lake Point is better, how? It’s still a small town where everyone knows everyone.”

“It just is. You know it, too.”

He lifted his glass in salute. “So you have a point. It is. Doesn’t mean I’ll stay.”

“Doesn’t mean you’ll leave, either.”

“Also true.”

Sunday Snippets 39 – Masked Hearts

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors!

MaskedHearts_MED

I’m back with my travelling wild west show story, Masked Hearts.

Skipping ahead a little ways. After some hemming and hawing, Minnie agreed to speak with Roy if he woke early enough to avoid them being caught by Mister Rawlins. He did manage, and met her by the creek.

After a little struggle, Minnie revealed some of her past. In the course of conversation, Roy asked if there were sometimes white men and women were part of the tribe, as wife or husband, or the like. Minnie admitted there sometimes were, and when asked (by him) acknowledged that one of them was a fur trapper:

“Why do you ask such things? You said you’d tell me.”

“That fur trapper,” He had to force the words out; the cracking in his voice so unusual it drew Minnie’s intense gaze back to him. “Did he and the woman have a child? A son?”

Her brows drew together, a frown creasing her lips down, “Yes.”

“Was he taken away?”

“Why?”

Minnie Woodward lives a lie. After barely surviving the Bear River Massacre she’s lived in the white world of her guardian Mister Rawlins, her life debt keeping her tied there. The last thing she needs is Roy’s attempts to gain her favor. Her fate’s sealed. She’s never believed in hope, and not even Roy can make her start.

Roy Ornum saves Minnie every night in the traveling Wild West show. The job he took to break his gambling habit brought him a new addiction – her. He knows she doesn’t want to be rescued, but maybe he does. She’s the key to a past he lost, one he wants to find again.

As the two grow closer old wounds are reopened and their burgeoning trust is shattered. When lives hang in the balance of their choices they’ll need to work together. Otherwise everything will be lost before hope can be found.

Tuesday Tales – Summer – Witch Way

felicityWelcome back to Tuesday Tales!  This weeks prompt is to be inspired by the word Summer.

Well, The Wolf is done, and while I must work on Witch Way, this weeks word prompt just didn’t fit. It also didn’t fit into Natural Selection. So this week I’m starting a new story. I believe it’ll be fantasy, but I haven’t figured it out completely yet.

This week’s prompt fell into my current WIP for the Holidays in Lake Point series, Witch Way. Felicity and Craig have been having a hot and heavy few meet and greets. Felicity is in it for a fling with a hot fireman, but she gets some advice from a trusted source:

Felicity dropped her bag in the mud room and kicked off her shoes. Before she even made it to the door she stripped out of her jacket and skirt. The moment her shirt hit the floor, a dress flew her way. She caught it on and slipped the simple black dress over her head. “Thanks, Patty. One more minute in that suit and I was going to burst.”

“You’re home late.” Near the window, Patty rearranged the plants for better light. The woman could have been Felicity’s mother, they looked so similar, with the exception of the grey streak at the front of her black locks, which were cut short in a cute bob as opposed to Felicity’s own long locks. “Wouldn’t have anything to do with that McAlister boy, would it?”

“Has the all-knowing Patty been peeking into her crystal ball again?” Felicity couldn’t quite keep the sardonic tone from her voice, but Patty only chuckled in response.

“Don’t be silly. I saw you on the square today. I told you that boy would grow up into a handsome young man.”

“Yes, he did. However, it’s just a fling, like all the others.”

“Oh, I doubt that.”

Felicity tensed a few feet behind Patty. She’d been about to give her aunt a hello kiss, but Patty’s knowing tone gave her pause. “Why do you say that?”

“I pulled the cards soon as I got home.”

“You promise you wouldn’t do that to me.” Felicity sighed and bypassed her aunt to perch on the counter. She popped a couple of grapes off the stem in the nearby fruit bowl. “You’re too close to do an accurate reading. Your feelings on the matter influence the cards.”

“No, not always. In this situation I wasn’t sure how to feel. After all, he wasn’t exactly the nicest boy when you were younger. I was worried for you, the cards eased my mind.”

“Because you wanted them to.” Felicity would never dismiss a good tarot reading, and Patty was the best, but Patty had also been the one that taught her how your own feelings could influence a reading.

“Would it make a difference if I told you I called Celeste as well?”

“Unfortunately, it would.”

“She got the exact same reading as I did. Card for card. Craig is a good man, and he’s meant to be around for a while.”

“Once the fling is flung he’ll be gone as the summer.”

“The summer does not depart until tomorrow, and Craig won’t pass with it.”

Felicity groaned and dropped her head into her hands. “I wanted a fling, Patty.”

“You’re getting a little old to be flinging yourself around.”

“No woman in our family has ever maintained a relationship with a man. Ever.”

“No woman has ever been like you, my darling girl.” Patty smoothed her hands over Felicity’s hair, pulling the ends over her shoulders. “Look at me.”

“I’m just like you, and you’ve said I’m just like my mother. My father left her soon as he heard about me and she up and died during childbirth.”

“And you, Felicity. You are more than either of us either were. You have managed to find the balance we never could. I am all crazy witch lady, your mother went straight normal, even faking church-going to soothe your father’s mind. When he found out the truth, thanks to Samhain, that’s when he left. It wasn’t about you.”

“And yet, it was.”

“He didn’t know. He never knew. I tried to contact him, but he refused to listen to me. Your mother blamed herself. None of that matters now. What matters now is who you are. I think you are the one that can keep a man, and keep your balance.”

“I don’t want to.” Felicity clasped her aunt’s hands in her own. “All of this feels like a curse. A hex on our family.”

“There is no such thing, we just suck at relationships.” Patty smiled. “You should give this a good chance before you dismiss it.”

“I just don’t know.” Truthfully, relationships scared her. Probably because no one ever stook around all that long. Plus, Craig hadn’t been too far off. Old teasing and taunts had followed her through childhood into her adult years.

“Have you told him the truth?”

“No. He can’t even say the word witch in my presence. He couldn’t handle it.”

“I think you should try.”

How Dare He? ~ #MFRWHooks

SantaMaybe_MEDReady for another Book Hook?

Since you all enjoyed my reunion/Christmas story intro last week, I’m going to stick with it. Remember as you read, Ivy and Alan last saw each other (and slept together) 8 years ago. There is more to this scene, to be shown in the coming weeks…but I’m sure you can guess what conclusions are being leapt to here:

“So you let me be the bad guy all these years when I didn’t even know?” He stepped into her path with a frown. “Real convenient for you.”

“Real presumptuous of you, don’t you think?” Even if she understood the assumption, she didn’t like to think that he, of all people, would think her capable of such a thing. “You’ve known me for years and you just assume I would do that?”

“We haven’t known each other for years. You just said so yourself.”

She bristled and straightened her spine. “Assume whatever you want, you jackass.”

“How could you?”

He really thought she’d keep his own child from him? Really? She slapped him hard. “Get your head out of your ass. I’m not a total bitch. How dare you accuse me of keeping a child from you! Did you not hear her name? Justina. As in Justin—the man I was dating last time we saw each other.”
