Truth be told, when I first started reading, I didn’t think I would like the book. In the first few chapters, my attention wandered.

Then, BAM. I was hooked and couldn’t put the story down until I’d finished.

Emma is your average college student, a sort of awkward wallflower who started pretending she didn’t hear or see ghosts at a young age. The separation she felt from the rest of society because of a childhood event carried into her young adulthood.  She’s shy and withdrawn and feels out of place with the friends her roommate hangs out with.

She’s dragged along to a frat party where she meets and gets a crush on a hot guy on campus, Matt. After a few more meetings disaster strikes, and Matt drowns in the river. Emma is blamed for his death by many on campus, including herself.

Overcome with guilt, Emma tries a spell, but fails to fulfill her end of it, and that’s when things get interesting.

We meet several new characters from that point on, and I fell in love with every single one of them. Sam was great, and Jake? Well, I fell in love with Jake right along with Emma as he proved to be more than he seemed at first. I was SO sad to see him go. The arrival of three men after that, took the take.

Added in the mix was a nosy cop that seemed to know too much…but Officer Walker became one of my favorite characters and I’m glad he’ll definitely be back in book 2.

I truly enjoyed watching Emma come into her own, grow a spine, and eventually figure out the answers she’d sought. The peace she, and the spirits she brought back, found was a welcome relief.

Overall, this was a great setup for a series, and I’m looking forward to book 2. I have a feeling Emma and Officer Walker are going to get into a whole new mess of trouble that’ll be fun to see resolved once again.

Three and a Half Stars

I’ll be honest. I had a hard time rating this one. I had to let it sit for a few days to figure it out.

When I read the description I thought “Man I’m going to love this one!” Then partway in I thought I was disappointed…and then the story went so fast and at the end I was mad it finished, so I figured I ended up liking it, but I wasn’t entirely sure. 🙂

David is a driven business and family man with a guilty secret–and affair he carried on years ago. He ended the affair, but when the woman disappeared with his children, he never stopped looking for them.

The book starts with David getting “the call”. His kids are alive and in a children’s shelter. He learns they’ve been abused and their coping mechanism is to believe they are dark wizards.

David himself is a flawed man. He is afraid of what damage the truth will do and continually hides it throughout the book, from beginning until the end. We see only through this thoughts that he might have learned his lesson finally, but not his actions. I wish we’d seen it more in his actions.

The book was told from an all male POV. First David and then his son Patrick. For me, that was disconcerting because I’m not used to it anymore, but it was handled well. I liked the breaks from David’s point of view to get Patrick, the “level-headed” one of the bunch.

I was disappointed in the ending, because I felt it was leading up to this giant crescendo…that never went anywhere. There was a great battle, that happened off screen. It was a let down…especially when the book ended abruptly right after. Sure, I want to be left wanting for book 2 (and I am…it is coming, right?)…but there was too much left unhandled, too much smoothed over, and not enough of the actual fight at the end. That’s why I had to knock it down to 3.5 stars.

In the end, yes I want to read book 2 whenever it’s finished…but I hope it’s not lacking the same thing this one was.

Destruction is not a romance, it’s more an Urban Fantasy.

Seduced by the Game – An Anthology for Hockey Fights Cancer

*I was provided a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine*

I’ll be honest, I don’t do many reviews here because I’m flat out lazy. However, when I saw this anthology coming available and the request for reviews? I couldn’t wait to review it!! I signed up quick as the sign-ups were open.
sbtg_review_banner
The anthology was packed with some amazing stories that centered around my absolute favorite sport – Hockey.  With a good mix of romance from sweet to burn your eyeballs spicy!!

Overall I gave the entire anthology 4 stars. As expected some authors just didn’t write in a style I liked, or the story didn’t grab me. I admittedly skimmed one or two, but those that grabbed me were powerful and well-written enough that I gave the whole shebang 4 stars.

So let me go over the standouts:

Hooking Hannah by Cassandra Carr & Cindy Carr – This story knocked it out of the park for me. It is my absolute favorite in the story. The romance was smoking, the hero (Scott) so amazing, and the heroine (Hannah) funny and strong. Their story was sweet and believable and they burned up the sheets – but what took this story over the edge to amazing for me was the scenes on the ice. The way the authors Carr wrote the hockey scenes was detailed and exact and I felt like I was back in my hometown of Buffalo listening to Rick Jeanneret call the play by play! It totally put me in the game and kept me there. Stunning writing.

Crashing the Boards by Jami Davenport – Most of this story takes place at a party on a boat and some naughty, kinky events. I was unfamiliar with Jami going into the story, but some of the sassy lines had me laughing and looking her up for more of her books. The interplay between the party crasher – Izzy, and the hockey player who thinks he’s onto her – Cooper, is excellent. Best part is when the truth is revealed and things blow up, the resolution isn’t perfect and immediate, but the way it’s handled is spot on and I love the potential.

Taking a Shot by Catherine Gayle – A sweet romance that touches on the cause behind the anthology – cancer. I loved the inclusion of a sweeter story and Katie’s crush-turned-romance was perfect.  The best part for me was Jamie’s doubts that had nothing to do with Katie, but his own role in her future. It was superbly realistic and touching.

Heir Apparent by V.L. Locey – Honestly, I don’t usually read much M/M, but I’m glad I did in this case. V.L. has quite a way with telling a story. It was real easy to get inside the character’s heads. Cam, the living legend who was faltering in his game in more ways than one, and Jacobi – Cam’s new back-up goalie and long-time fan. The mix of May/December romance with a bit of the struggle with admitting who you really are was beautifully handled in this short story.

With these great stories, and the good cause, this is an excellent buy!!

Excerpts (see attached document)

-from Heir Apparent by V.L. Locey

I padded along beside him with no reply for his comment. He was right. Everyone knew his face in “The Burgh.” The longer we walked, the more I accepted that I would freeze to death. We made two complete laps in total silence. Cam stopped to drop his empty coffee cup into a trash can. We stood under a streetlight, our breath twin clouds of steam hovering in front of us.

“You have to understand that this…I don’t know how to go about…shit.” He stuffed his hands into the pockets of his parka. Again, we started walking.

“Look, man, if I knew for sure what we were dealing with, maybe I could help a little better,” I said. A biracial couple hurried past us. I burrowed into my flimsy coat until all that stuck out of the collar were my eyes.

“I have a daughter. She’s a senior in high school.”

“Awesome,” I mumbled into my coat. My forehead was extremely cold. Like ice cream eaten too fast cold. We kept walking that block.

“She is awesome.” I peeked over at him. I wished he would drop that fucking hood so I could see his face. “And not aware of how things were with her mother and me.”

“How things were, or how you were pretending they were?” I chanced it. What the hell? He would either slug me, call me a motherfucker, or stalk off. Whatever happened it had to be better than roaming around this fucking city block when the temperature was a balmy four degrees. “I mean, that is what you’re dancing around, right? That you’re so far back in the closet you just discovered Narnia? Why not just admit that much to yourself before we both succumb to fucking hypothermia.”

I should have known that Cameron Evans was a man of action. I mean, I followed his career all though my school years. He was fast. My back was against the wall under that old clock before I could register the shove. Cam then got all sorts of in my face. I did not raise my hands. His angry exhalation was flavored with vanilla.

“Are you calling me a queer?” I shrugged one shoulder.

“I call them as I see them. Now, you can either step off or you can kiss me.” I threw the challenge out without a second thought. I stared into the shelter of his hood, finding his dark eyes in the shadows. They flickered down to my blue lips. “Whatever you decide to do, do it fast. I’m cold, tired, and hungry.”

He did. He captured my mouth with a kiss so aggressive my teeth ground into my lips. Yeah. This was it. This was what I had been pushing him to do…hoping he would do.

Travels with Gannon & Wyatt, Review & Giveaway!

Travels with Gannon and Wyatt- BotswanaWe LOVE reading in this house.

I mean really, REALLY love it.

The day I told the girls I had brand new books for them to read was a party and a half. They were so excited, and when we cracked open the books from the “Travels with Gannon & Wyatt” series it was all over.

I mean, it’s ANIMALS!

The girls immediately dove in and scanned for pictures first, because the pictures of the live animals (the alligator was a big hit for our little alligator), and they couldn’t wait to see every one of them.

Once they’d settled down we sat down to read.

The stories are told in journal form, with separate entries by both Gannon & Wyatt, which make for short “chapters” perfect for my ADD readers.

I also love that each of the entries start with a great learning opportunity (or 2).  They list the location – with a longitude and latitude. Temperatures and weather listings are there too.  These gave me and the girls some great chances to talk about what these things are, and find a map (~cough~ or a computer ~cough~) to look them all up. Of course, there’s all the animals, which my kids LOVE.  Oh, and at the end, there’s a few pages with spots for journal entries.  The girls are dying to take a trip to the zoo to use them!

Kennedy got to read first and eagerly dove in, and by the time she was home, she was dragging Molly over to join her.

Hearing Kennedy say words like “Botswana” and “Kalahari Dessert” at her young age, is so much fun. She’s having fun, she’s reading, and she’s learning.

Kennedy has taken a shining to the Botswana book.  It has all the animals she loves. Elephants, alligators, rhinos and cheetah’s.

We love sitting down and devouring chapters as fast as she can.

I have a feeling these books are going to be long lasting around here, so much to read and learn, and the older they get, the more they’ll understand!

As you can see below, the girls HIGHLY recommend the books and want you to win a set of your own. (Look below the picture for how to win)

Blood Guilt by Marie Treanor {A Review}

All it took for me to review this book was the cover. Is that not just gorgeous?

Gorgeous cover aside, I didn’t know what to expect when I dove into this book.  Obviously I read the blurb (see below) – but I hadn’t read any of Marie Treanor’s books before.  This book is the start of a new series for her, but the new series is a spinoff of her Awakened by Blood Series.

While I hadn’t read that series I found it wasn’t necessary.  Even though I didn’t know the existing characters (which make appearances), there was enough background information given that I never once felt lost.

I have to say that it has been a while since I devoured a book this fast.  While I have been out of my ‘reading’ phase, this book made me forget that I took a few months off of reading.  I read it so fast that I was incredibly sad it was over and already researching how much it would cost to buy the original series (side note: not a lot…I’ll be getting them very soon).

Mihaela is a damaged and lonely vampire hunter.  She spent her whole life living for her job – but recent events have changed the rules she’s always known.  While she’s trying to cope with the change in rules and the division of her loyalties and beliefs – she goes on vacation to Scotland.

Of course, what good vacation isn’t ruined (or is it made ages better?) by complications?  The complications come in the form of a powerful young boy, an old vampire with whom she has a vendetta against, and an even older and far more perplexing vampire named Maximilian.

Mihaela has to learn how to adjust to the new rules – and her own changing heart – as she races to save not just the little boy, but the whole world.

I instantly fell in love with the damaged Mihaela.  I’m a sucker for damaged characters, and Mihaela fit the bill.  I truly enjoyed the fact that while she was damaged, she was fiercely loyal – but also not opposed to learning the new rules and seeing how things would go.  Granted, her willingness to do that added another layer of trouble to her life, but it also added more layers to her.

Maximilian took me a little to warm up to – but only because I could see easily see him through Mihaela’s eyes.  Of course, he won me over fast and thankfully he at least made dents in Mihaela’s wall early on.  I think the moment he truly won me over though was when, despite his intense needs and wants – when he was told ‘no’ he walked away.  Pretty sure I cheered out loud at that point.

Together the two had the kind of fiery but fun relationship I adore.  The love scenes were smoking hot and intense.  The relationship had it’s flaws from the start and at the end things weren’t “perfect” – but the issues were on the table and everyone agreed to work to keep it that way.

[amazon_link id=”B0088Q23F8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Blood Guilt[/amazon_link] is definitely one of my favs for the year so far and I look forward to book 2.  Until then I’ll be satisfying myself with [amazon_link id=”B005B1H9X4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Blood on Silk[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id=”B0064XCOH4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Blood Sin[/amazon_link], and [amazon_link id=”0451234723″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Blood Eternal[/amazon_link].

She’s taking a much needed vacation inScotlandwhen she sees a little boy being chased through the streets ofEdinburgh. Rescuing him brings bigger problems – two vampires from her past: Gavril, who killed her family; and the reclusive and troubled Maximilian, gifted Renaissance artist and one-time overlord of the most powerful undead community in the world. Maximilian once saved her life and now needs that favor returned.

The earth moves for Mihaela in more ways than one. Medusa: A Love Story by Sasha Summers

If I say I got signed up for this book just because of the blurb you can take it to heart. Me and mythology? We have never mixed well.

Still, even I know of Medusa – at least the basics.  Beyond that I knew nothing.  I didn’t know the original mythology or the reworking by Ovid (some of those old tales disgusted me when I checked on them after reading this book), I only knew what we all knew.

Medusa.   With the ‘hair’ and the turning people to stone.

Sasha Summers created out of old sexist mythology a tale that I could truly enjoy.  Medusa and Ariston were characters I fell in love with and got invested in.  Their love transcended duty and grew out of true affection.  They could not even touch each other for the first portion of the book.

By the time I got halfway through the book I became so enraptured with the love of the two that I didn’t want to go on.  Things were happy, things were beautiful – why on earth would I want to see the hell that would occur?  War, betrayal, and the eventual curse?

I did push through and I’m glad I did.  The ending brought everything to a satisfying conclusion and even though I still could care less for most of the Gods – the mortal beings were wonderful to behold.

Because I insist on being honest in my reviews I do have to comment on the one thing that bothered me and occasionally pulled me out of the story.  The frequent hard breaks and back tracking to switch POV’s in a chapter (or in a scene) wore on me after a time.  I also love to know what everyone is thinking, but not at the expense of losing the flow of what I’m reading.  Sasha hints in her epilogue at another story in this mythological world and I hope that this is addressed – because books like hers may be the only way I actually manage to learn any mythology at all.

My final ruling?  4 stars out of 5.

Blurb:

It’s said love can change a person. Medusa wasn’t always a monster…

Medusa is ruled by duty, to her Titan father and the Goddess Athena. She’s no room for the tenderness her warrior guard, Ariston, stirs. WhenOlympusfrees her from service, her heart leads her into the arms of the guard she loves… and curses her as the creature with serpent locks.

Ariston goes to war with a full heart… and dreadful foreboding. He learns too late of the danger Medusa faces, alone, and a Persian blade sends him into the Underworld. But death, curses, nor the wrath of the Gods will keep him from returning to her.

Poseidon will useGreece’s war to get what he wants: Medusa. He does not care that she belongs to another. He does not care that she will be damned. He is a God, an Olympian, and she will be his.

Excerpt:

“You asked for an audience, you have it. Now tell me, where do you belong?” Hades’ voice was deep, emotionless.

Ariston swallowed. “Athens.” He met Hades’ gaze, but the God revealed nothing to him.

“Why? You died with honor and glory. Is that not what every soldier wants?”

“My wife…” His voice wavered.

Hades brow lifted slightly. “Lives. You do not.”

“She is in danger.”

“Earthly danger. She is no longer your concern, Ariston.”

“The danger she faces is not earthly, but far from it…” Ariston’s voice was hoarse, his desperation mounting. He took a wavering breath before he began again. “She is everything to me. I am proud of my death, but it means nothing if she is in peril. I must know.” Ariston kneeled. “I beg you. I beg you to return me toAthens.”

Ariston waited, willing himself to be strong.

“Who is this wife?” Hades asked.

“Medusa ofAthens.” He paused. “Now ofRhodes.”

Hades was silent, his dark blue eyes regarding him steadily.

“When I die—” Ariston began.

“You are dead,” Hades assured him.

“When I return…die again, I would serve as guardian to Tartarus. I am a skilled warrior, a skill I might offer you.” He spoke with confidence.

“You vex me,” Hades muttered, the slightest crease appearing between his eyes. “You offer this to me for a woman?”

Ariston nodded. “She is worthy.”

Hades was silent again, his eyes shifting to the blue-white flames in the massive

fireplace.

“My words do not…adequately express the love I have for this woman. But I cannot leave her. She is at risk. I must return.” The words came without thought. How could he justify such emotion to a God who reviled affection or companionship? “AsOlympushas my arm and sword, she has my heart – a mortal, and perhaps weak, heart.”

The room was silent for too long. He would have to fight his way out…

“It is a weakness not reserved for mortals alone, Ariston of Rhodes.” Hades’ words were so soft Ariston feared they’d not been spoken. But Hades continued, strong and clear. “I will return you to your ship so that you may lead your men to victory. Too many have fallen from this war and I would see it end. When that is done, you may go to your wife.” He paused then added, “When you return to my realm, I will have your fealty.”

The God of the Underworld, Lord of Death, gave him mercy? Mayhap there was one God he might serve with honor.

Ariston vowed, “You have it.”
