Time Races On

TimeTime is moving fast these days.

When I would like to sit back and breathe it in.

There are great things happening.

There are frightening things happening.

There are moments I want to hide away and pretend the world doesn’t exist.

And moments I want to just sit and enjoy.

When I was growing up I wished I was older. I wished I could do things I was too young for.  I wished to be grown up.

Now I just wish for time to slow. For the days to not rush by in a whirlwind of activity and necessity.

Just yesterday I had a six year old son and was realizing that I might just be pregnant with Molly.

Now my son is a teenager, my daughters are almost 8 & 7. My marriage is ten years old.  This blog is seven (really?).

We’ve gone from one neurotypical son to three special needs children.

They’ve grown up and are declaring independence and having dreams of their own (A doctor! A model! A teacher! Oh my.).

My husband has had his struggles and we’ve had ours together.

What I wouldn’t give for a chance to take my family outside of the home equation and give us time away.  It isn’t in the cards this year, it never seems to be..and we’re running out of time.

Time that is moving way too fast.

Because soon, Denver will be in college. The girls in high school.

And we’ll blink and they’ll have their own lives.

Can we slow it down?

Just for a few days?

Silent Tears – by Lacie Nation {Book Spotlight}

I’m pleased to have Lacie Nation here today to spotlight her wonderful book, Silent Tears. I’ve enjoyed reading her snippets during Hump Day Hook and am thrilled to have a copy in my inbox having won it last week. I can’t wait to dive in very soon.  For now, enjoy this wonderful excerpt and then head on out and buy it yourself!

Excerpt:

She bowed her head in a slow nod as he moved past her and left them alone. His office was nearly soundproof, so the pounding music from the club below was nothing but a low thump.

“What can I do for you, Ms. DeLuca?” Brax walked around the desk and leaned back against it crossing his feet at the ankles.

“Don’t you think Ms. DeLuca is a little formal considering we are to be married in a few months?”

“Perhaps it is, but that would depend on what you’re doing here.” He crossed his arms over his chest.

“I thought since we are, in fact, going to be husband and wife, maybe we could get to know each other.”

“I can promise you, you don’t want to marry me.”

“You’re absolutely right, but since neither of us have a choice in the matter, why not learn all we can about each other. Many things have changed in the twelve years since we’ve seen each other.” She took a step closer to him and her eyes traveled from his face all the way down to his wing tipped shoes.

Brax stood up to his full six feet four inches. With two long, powerful strides, he closed the distance between them and circled around her like a vulture. The curls from earlier were gone and her hair was straight and glossy. Her legs were bare instead of covered in panty hose and her skin looked silky smooth.

“You don’t want to know me, Camellia.”

“Why is that, Braxton?” Her voice sounded a little breathy as she spoke.

“Because, I’m a very bad man.” He pulled out his .45 and ran the barrel from her temple to her collarbone. Cam shivered, but never showed any sign of being threatened as her eyes followed his every move. “I do things that would make you shudder.”

“Show me.”

“Show you what?” He stepped closer, so close that her breasts were pressed against his chest.

Having her body so close to his made him want her in a way he had never wanted another woman. Brax had a hard time figuring out what emotion was stronger. Figuring out what she was hiding, or taking her to his bed.

“Show me how bad you can be.” Her gaze never left his. He pushed her hair away from her face with the end of the gun.

As the words left her mouth, Brax saw a brief flash of confusion cross her face. As if she couldn’t believe she had said what she had. Before he could think anymore about it, she recovered and was back to being the sexy, sassy woman she’d been when she walked in his office.

He leaned in even closer. “I don’t think you’re ready for that, bambina.”

“Trust me, Mr. Godfry, I’m no baby.” Before Brax even realized she’d moved, there was a knife at his throat.

Their eyes met, neither of them backing down an inch. A woman who could hold her own was incredibly sexy. Her gaze was sharp and cunning, but as he looked her right in the eyes, he knew for a fact she had secrets. Even if he hadn’t seen her in years, he had known her better than anyone else before she left. A person could change over time, but there were still little mannerisms that were ingrained to deep to disappear completely. The way she flexed her jaw as she looked at him told him was her tell.

“Tell me your secrets, Camellia.”

“I have no secrets,” she hissed and pressed the knife harder against his neck. The cold steel of the blade nicked his skin.

“Careful there, Cam. A little tighter and you will have the entire Godfry family on your ass.” He pressed his gun to the side of her head because at the moment she wasn’t a beautiful woman, but an enemy who posed a threat. She backed off, but he did not, and as she moved away from him, his arm extended out straight, keeping his aim on her. “Try that shit again, and woman or not, I will put a bullet through you.”

“Noted, now that we’re clear on that, how about a drink?” A slow, sexy little smile graced her lips.

Brax flipped the safety on and holstered his weapon. “We’ll be lucky if both of us make it out of this marriage alive.”

Her Turn To Dream…and Succeed

[flickr id=”8475700237″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”left”]A few weeks ago I posted about Molly’s dream of being a “fashion girl”.  Never did I imagine that making that simple post would allow me the honor of being able to help one of my children achieve their dream so quick.

One of the Indy Geek Girls, Katy, contacted me that same day and said that she might have an opportunity for Molly to be a model on the local morning news.  She needed to check details, but it was a good chance she could be a model within the month.  By last week it was a done deal & I just had to keep the tremendous news from Molly so she wouldn’t freak out too early.  By Wednesday I caved and the next day was chaos.

Friday morning, bright and early we got up, we fixed our hair and makeup and hopped in the truck. Not before a few rounds of “are we there yet?” we managed to arrive about 40 minutes later.

[flickr id=”8476791438″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”left”]By this point Molly was practically bouncing out of the truck, and my tummy was twisting in knots.  How would she react in this place with all the excitement and new people and strange situations and cameras everywhere?

After a short time we were able to get her dressed and camera ready.  She was bouncing out of her skin as we waited for the commercial break so we could head into the (surprisingly tiny) studio.

Finally the time came and Molly Cass was called on camera.  At first, she later told me, she was afraid of messing up.  It showed in her ‘deer in the headlights’ expression and the shuffle of her feet.  Then…then she saw herself on the monitor and it all changed.  She smiled and shone…and life was amazing.

For the rest of the day she was on Cloud 9 and even today she’s still talking about it and asking when we can “go back to Fox 59”. 🙂

I thought living my dream was amazing…

It’s nothing compared to watching your child live theirs.

Tuesday Tales – Spider

candleAnother Tuesday Tales, the same story – still without a title.

The prompt this week is spider, and I used it REALLY early on because I had no idea how to fit it into the story.

Remember, this is a meme with many contributing authors, so make sure to click the link at the bottom of the image to take you to see more!

Anyhow, as always this is un-edited mostly, so forgive any errors. :

“You want me to die. Simple as that. No explanation required?” I scoffed and folded my arms across my chest.  “And what’s in the box? What plague have you brought me?”

“I’m not quite sure. It could be as simple as a spider or as complex as a simulated virus. I only asked that it not be painful for you.” My father continued to hold the box in front of me, I could feel the smoldering power of his will pressing on me.

“Impossible. I have settled in here. I’m attached to this family. The children.”

“They are not yours. It should be of little consequence.”

“Do you think me completely heartless?” My pulse started to race. The ambient temperature rising further, my hand once again burning. I stepped back from the offending red box. “Unlike you I care about them.”

“You’ve been known to be plenty heartless when the need called for it. I’ve seen you slay young ones weaker than those two.” He pointed at the family portrait on the wall. “When the need called for it.”

Tears welled up behind my ears, dousing some of the rising heat of my soul.  I shook my head, “Never on purpose. They were casualties of war. A war I fought and survived just as you did, Father.”

“And now we must do everything in our power to maintain that peace. If war erupts again those two children and this entire world could be at risk of another annihilation.”

“Don’t be so dramatic.  That hasn’t happened since the dinosaurs were wiped out. Millions of years, Father.”

“Jyoti. Have you ever known me to exaggerate?” His silver hair gleamed in a stray beam of sunlight as wind picked up outside. The planes of his human features shimmered with hints of silver under the flesh. His disguise had been hastily and not quite thoroughly formed.  Even the gray eyes gleamed with hidden fire.

Concern lodged a lump of emotion thick in my throat. My father was many things, melodramatic was not one of them.  “What has happened?”

“I’ll show you.”

I jerked my hand back from his reach. “I will maintain this form.”

He sighed and nodded. “Fine. For now you will.”  The red box disappeared in a burst of fire.

Still hesitant, I set my hand into his and stepped close to him.

In another burst of fire my living room faded to black and all I could feel was the burn of fire and wind as we moved fast. I closed my eyes, soaking in the heat in a way I hadn’t enjoyed for fifteen years.

“You miss it.” His voice was warm and kind again. “Why do you fight?”

“Of course I miss it. It is where I am from, what I am. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the life I have now. My home, my family, my friends. Being human is not as tedious as you make it to me.”  I still refused to open my eyes, even as the fire faded and the world around us came into reality again.

“Look, Jyoti.”

Opening my eyes might mean being swayed to his point of view. My nails dug into his flesh until the thin layer cracked under the pressure and scales resisted the same fate.

“You must, child.”

Wytchfae Runes – #Giveaway #PNR {Author Flossie Benton Rogers}

By Flossie Benton Rogers

Celebration time for two reasons! First, Wytchfae – Runes is now available in print as well as eBook. Later this week I’ll be able to hold a copy of the printed book in my hands. If you have ever worked in a library or browsed among the book shelves in a library or bookstore, you’ll know why that is important to me. Readers who don’t have Kindles, Nooks, or other devices, and those who prefer traditionally printed books, can now get their copies. Second, I signed a contract with Secret Cravings Publishing for six more paranormal fantasy romances in the Wytchfae Series, starring fairies, witches, demons, angels, goddesses, dark guardians, ghosts, and other magical beings. My novella Guardian of the Deep (Wytchfae 2) is due out in June 2013 and features the romance of a Succubus and an undersea lord. I love the story of Layla and Samael and can’t wait to share it with you.

Wytchfae_MEDCONTEST ALERT! To celebrate, I will give away an eBook copy of Wytchfae – Runes to one lucky person who comments on this post in answer to the question:  What are you most drawn to or do you most appreciate about Ireland, such as Irish culture, food, music, scenery, Celtic mythology, or whatever? The winner will be randomly selected. I look forward to seeing your choices!

I pose the question because this week my blog focuses on Ireland (see link at the end of this post). A few months ago friends of mine took a trip to Ireland and shared some wonderful pictures with me. The posts are about their trip and my favorite poet William Butler Yeats. They even blew him a kiss for me! Also, the bloodline of the faery witch Kelly in Wytchfae – Runes is Irish. The Excerpts below show Kelly and Ingvar’s encounter with the Ghuillie Dhu, a prominent theme in Celtic lore.

Blurb: Combine one faery witch and one hot Viking ghost and what do you get? Supernova attraction. Can they evade their enemies long enough to fan the flame?

Opening Line: In a star’s blink, a claw like hand gripped Ingvar’s throat and crushed him against the wall.

One Line Teaser: Kelly had seen Ingvar transform from insubstantial apparition to hot red blooded male.

Excerpt:

Kelly peered out into the mire where she had first seen the gnomes. No more shuffled toward them, but a mass of the creatures hovered off to one side. Their bodies seemed to pulsate with the low grunts they emitted. The noise sounded like agitated bull alligators. Spotting something else in the shadows, she squinted. In the midst of the cypress gnomes stood a massive figure. Her blood froze. Although she had never seen him in person, she knew in her gut this was Ghuillie Dhu, the Dark Man borne on the bowels of the swamp. Kelly rubbed her wrist on Ingvar’s forearm to direct his attention. His head turned toward the spot she indicated, and she felt his body clench. “I see it,” he whispered. “What is it?” Kelly put her lips against his ear. “Dark Man of the Swamp. Dangerous son of a bitch.”

Before she could blink the Dark Man stood just in front of them. She had not even seen him move. Her gaze traveled upward toward eyes that burned like red hot coals. Although he stood off the path at the edge of the water, his height still exceeded that of the giant Viking beside her by at least six inches, and he was wider by far. His appearance had manlike qualities, but such that had never been seen on earth in daylight. The smell that overpowered her senses was one of rancid swamp decay. Acid gurgled in her throat, giving her the dry heaves. She tried again to swallow. The Dark Man reminded her of an ancient rotting tree, with swamp juice in its veins, that had somehow grown sentient.
