ExcerptPink

The one story building was brick and had no windows. A neon open sign hung in the glass door. This must be a bar, but I had no other options and was not about to start driving aimlessly looking for a more family-friendly place to eat alone. I parked and entered the building.

The smell of smoke and beer met me. A long bar lined the wall with bottles of liquor filling the shelves behind it. Low hung lights with green shades gave the place little lighting. Several guys played pool in the back corner. Several other men stopped to look at me from the tables scattered around the room.

I took a deep breath and made my way to the bartender, who was watching me from the bar. The older man had graying hair and looked slightly overweight. I tried to ignore the fact that I looked like an alien in here, with my stark white dress, expensive purse, jewelry and high heels clicking on the weathered tile. I took the barstool directly in front of the bartender, feeling eyes watch me the whole way there.

“Lost?” he asked bluntly.

“And very hungry sir,” I said meekly and embarrassed.

He gave me a sad smile and handed me a sheet of laminated paper they called a menu. After quickly scanning through, I ordered a burger and fries. I anxiously played with the charms of my bracelet while waiting for my food to come. I could feel the eyes burning into my back, but the voices picked back up as I no longer was the center of attention.

I couldn’t tell if it was dark out yet from inside the dark and dingy bar. I almost laughed when I thought of my mother’s reaction if she knew where I was, instead of her well-planned party. I never went out to bars and partied like my classmates did. I stayed in, concentrated on my studies and watched as Chloe and the girls got ready to head out for nights of fun and drinking. I didn’t imagine this would be the kind of bar they would go to, though.

My food arrived and I slowly ate the burger to stall from having to start the drive home. Driving in the dark on the winding country roads was the last thing I wanted to do. After all, I know how dangerous that could be. Maybe Carter would be sitting on my patio with me right now if it had been daylight for his drive home. Maybe I wouldn’t be in this smokey bar alone.

I slid my card to the bartender when he took my empty plate. “Do you want to start a tab?” he asked me.

“For drinks?” I asked, like I have never been in a bar before. “Yes,” I answered quickly to cover my embarrassment. I could at least try to look like I know what I am doing and remotely blend in. I grabbed my ID from my purse and slid it across the bar.

“What can I get you then, sweetie?” He tucked my card under the register.

“Scotch. On the rocks,” rolled off my tongue before even thinking. I had no idea what I was thinking. I saw it in so many movies and commercials, it seemed like the right thing to say.

The bartender tried to hide his laugh and shook his head. Taking a bottle from the shelves behind him, he filled a glass and slid it in front of me. The smell burned my nose as I lifted it to my lips. He watched me curiously as I inhaled a deep breath. I took a long drink from the glass to keep up my rouse.

The liquid burned my throat like I swallowed flames. I instantly started coughing and shaking my head to clear the burn. I kept my eyes down on the ice cubes in my glass to avoid looking at the bartender. Surely, he must know how deep over my head I am by now.

“Hey, Hank,” came from a voice from next to me, drawing the worried man away from me.

“Ryder,” he said back to the voice while popping the top off a beer bottle and sliding it across the bar. I didn’t even hear him ask for one.

I rolled the glass around in my hands and kept my gaze down. I just wanted to crawl up in a hole and hide from here, this bar, and home and my family. But, I currently have no where to hide that’s not any of those places.

“You’re not from around here, are you?” I heard in a deep voice near my ear.

I looked up quickly to see the guy, named Ryder, sliding over to the stool next to me. His eyes traveled from my high heels, up my bare legs and the rest of my body before landing on my face. I wanted to cringe away from his look, but my body made no moves. I could almost feel his eyes moving up my skin.

Even with an empty and broken heart, my mind could not ignore that the face in front of mine was striking. Black hair spiked in every direction. His pointed jaw and high cheekbones brought all your attention to piercing, dark brown eyes. Some stubble on his chin made him look older, but his broad shoulders and wide chest showed a body of someone younger. He raised one eyebrow at me, reminding me he asked a question.

“Um…no. I’m not,” I stuttered, turning away from his handsome face. He was opposite of Carter in almost every way. I could see him still watching me from the corner of my eye, so I took another drink to break the tension. My body shuddered as the Scotch burned it’s way down.

“Hank, Mojito,” he called out, slamming his hand on the bar.

Hank slid a tall glass with mint leaves and a clear liquid inside. I turned to look at Ryder in shock as he slid the Scotch away from me and downed the rest.

“This is better. Trust me,” he said, sliding the glass closer to me.

In utter curiosity, I took a small sniff. The smell of citrus and mint was a delightful contrast to the previous drink.

“Thank you,” I said, bringing the drink to my lips. The drink burned when swallowed, but then was washed away with the freshness of mint, lime and bubbles.

“Ryder,” the stranger said, sticking out his hand. His eyes shined bright with amusement and something that looked almost daring, like he was challenging me.

“Kallie,” I answered, putting my hand in his. His large hand covered mine. It was rough and instantly warmed my whole body.I have an obsession with owls.

“Helping” Him Notice by Kimberly Krey

“Help! One day he seems interested, the next he acts like I don’t even exist.”

rkkRelationships can be rather tricky at times. Men are often clueless as to the time and attention we women need. In novel Reese’s Cowboy Kiss, Reese realizes the truth of this when Blake, the man watching over her in witness protection, spends hours late into the night out on the land. And though the two have had a connection, he continues to leave her to either eat alone, or go against his wishes and invite the ranch hands to join her for dinner. Upon doing just that, Reese takes a moment to enjoy their company, not minding when Blake walks in to find her cozied up to Stockton, one of the flirtatious ranch hands. Here’s what happens next:

Reese giggled. “Yeah,” she said, resting a hand on Stockton’s arm. “It’s crazy, alright.” She knew it was straight out childish to go flirting with Stockton to get Blake’s attention, but the thought was secondary to the ideas rummaging through her mind. Blake had been neglectful the last few days, and Reese felt it was high time he knew she had other options. Ones right close by that weren’t so bad to look at either.

“Time for you guys to take the party downstairs,” Blake said. “I’m going to hit the sack as soon as I’m finished here.”

“Come downstairs with us,” Tom said, coming to a stand.

The look Blake gave her in that moment presented a dare. The heat of his angry glare assuring her she’d meet opposition if she accepted.

“Alright,” she blurted.

Blake’s back straightened. His shoulders raised. “Reese?”

The guys stopped in their tracks. Reese responded as she continued to walk. “Yeah?”

“I wanted to talk to you for a minute,” he said.

Reese didn’t bother looking back at him. She had wanted to talk to him too. Before he’d spent the entire night away. Again. “I’m sure I won’t be too long,” Reese finally said. “We can talk when I come back.” And with that, she headed down the stairs, three chuckling ranch hands at her heels.

Observations:

1. Reese took matters into her own hands. She didn’t like eating alone each night, and so she did something about it.

2. Reese chose, in that moment, not to nag or pout about Blake’s absence. Instead of telling him again and again that she’d like him to come in sooner and join her for dinner, she reminded him that she had other options.

3. She allowed the others to flirt with her, and offered a little back in return. This can definitely backfire, ladies. Sometimes women can do this to the point they convince their guy that they’re losing interest. While simultaneously leading the other to believe they are into them. So tread carefully with this one.

4. In the following chapter, Reese gives Blake a chance to make amends. Never be so punishing that you hinder a man from making things right. A good man will respond in action, not just words, and when he does, show your appreciation.

Top Ten Tuesday – Retro Toys

Top 10 Retro ToysI guess you could say this list was a long time coming.

I’m often stuck in the past, reminiscing about how things were. It helps that a lot of my old toys are still around the ‘rents house, some were even used by my kids.

This time around I’m going with toys I actually owned & used myself. There were a fair amount I would have killed for (like My Little Pony’s) that I never got (and now lavish on my girls…seriously, they have SO MANY PONIES).

Anyway, onto that magic list of 10 Retro Toys I owned & adored.

  1. Waterful Ring Toss. Yes, I know it’s horribly cheesy and simple, but I adored this game. I played it all the time at our cottage on lake Erie. Actually, we had two, but this is the one I remember clearly. The other was more of a maze. 🙂
  2. The Tupperware playset. My aunt sold Tupperware and our house was filled with the stuff. I didn’t just have this playset (which I used in my Holly Hobby kitchen, thank you very much), I had  the miniature cake holder (which I used with my easy bake oven, yes sir, I did).
  3. PUFFALUMP!!  My uncle worked for Fisher Price (talk about JACKPOT), so probably 85% of our toys were Fisher Price.  I’ll admit to getting this gorgeous purple kitty before they were in stores (which was a rare treat…usually it was just at holidays/birthdays). I loved it almost as much as #4 here…
  4. Cabbage Patch Dolls, of course. That one there was my first, and her name is Daisy and I still have her. The other 5 are gone now, but Daisy was my girl. The first. And she came with a story. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was begging for Cabbage Patch dolls, but all of the stores were sold out in Buffalo. Well, we happened to go on a hockey tournament to Toronto. Everyone was chilling in the hotel when one parent rushed in and hollered down the hall “They have Cabbage Patch at the Toys R Us!!”  Mass exodus occured. ALL of the parents rushed from the hotel to go to the conveniently located toy store across the street to buy. And so Daisy showed up in her big yellow box in a hotel room in Toronto and I will never forget my excitement in that moment.
  5. The Fisher Price doctor kit. I used this constantly. The syringe that looked like it filled and emptied by turning the knob. The stethoscope that you could actually heard your heartbeat with. Seriously, the pain wore off the crap we played with it so much.
  6. Merlin. Does anyone else remember this? I had that exact version with just the spots that light up, not numbers. It kept me occupied for hours.
  7. Spirograph. ‘Nuff said.
  8. Lite Brite, of course. Didn’t we all have and love this one?
  9. The Millennium Falcon. This sucker is still parked in my parents garage. The sounds haven’t worked in years…but I remember every inch of the thing, and playing with it all the time.
  10. ATARI. Seriously. That is all. (Fav game – Pitfall, of course)

And that is it for this list. I’ll revisit retro toys and the giant wish list I had once upon a time.  Of course, in this list I didn’t touch on my Barbie’s which were as dear to me as any of these toys…but they were as much present in my worls as my girls Barbie’s and Monster High Dolls!!

Speaking of which…next week I cover my favorite Monster High Dolls…(Hint-hint…Christmas is coming 😉 & I hold no shame about liking these as much as my girls and wanting some that are MINE, not theirs.)

Tuesday Tales – Right – Witch Way

felicityWelcome back to Tuesday Tales!  This weeks prompt is to be inspired by the word Right. This is our last week before a month’s hiatus. I suppose the hiatus is for the best – in the coming weeks I’ll be editing 3 books, releasing 1, preparing 2 for Indie release, writing at least 2 stories, and getting started on the editing for the story this weeks prompt is part of. I have a lot coming up between now and February of next year, and hope to have even more in 2015. So, in short, I’m a busy busy writer. Now, onto this weeks prompt.

This week’s prompt fell into my current WIP for the Holidays in Lake Point series, Witch Way.  Of course, I can’t leave you in the happy end of things…you get stuck in the midst of Felicity’s hell – which she brought on herself.

Felicity thought she was going to throw up. Unable to see Craig in the dark, and with the monotone he’d used, she couldn’t gauge where this was going to lead. No matter what, it sounded bad. She swallowed against the rising bile and wrapped her arms around her belly.

At the moment she wanted nothing more than to wallow in her misery, but instead she chose to push it aside like she’d learned years ago. Unfortunately, she didn’t expect it to be so difficult this time. She had no idea the prospect of losing Craig would hurt so much.

She nodded weakly. “I know it’s not.”

“Was this your plan all along?” He went from standing still to pacing around her in a heartbeat. She couldn’t decide if it was more lion stalking its prey, or caged animal working off nerves while looking for an escape.

“What? No!” The strangled shriek shocked her, and if the way he stopped his pacing was any indication, it had surprised him as well. She took a shaky breath and tried to ground herself, but all sense of calm was long gone. “It was a series of bad coincidences and worse decisions.”

“You used me, to get in that office.”

“No. It wasn’t like that. I swear it.”

“How can I believe you?”

The cold air sank into her bones and left her numb. She hadn’t felt this helpless in years, and she didn’t like it. “I guess you can’t.”

“I want to.”

Damn him. Damn him to hell. Just when she’d almost resolved herself to returning to her former stance on men, he offers a sliver of hope. One she found herself clinging to like a life line. “I didn’t mean for it to happen. I made a bad choice.”

“Go on.”

“Will you come out of the shadows, please?”

“I can’t. Not right now. I don’t know what to think, Feli. What to feel.”

“Neither do I! I’m standing here in the open, though. Exposed.” Raw. Her insides were raw and pained. “I went to visit you, I didn’t go to try to get in that office. I really did go to visit you. I left the room with you, remember? When the call went out, I left the room. You locked it.”

“I locked it.” His voice held a mix of relief and wonder, like a confirmation to more than just her. “I did lock it. So what, you broke in?”

The anger was back, and she unwillingly flinched under it. “No. I stood there, I waved goodbye to you. I was going to leave, but when I went for my keys I realized I didn’t have my purse. I only went back to the office to check, but when I tried to contemplate what to do next, I hit the door in frustration. It just clicked open. I don’t think it closed all the way.”

Only his elbow sat in the light, and his fingers tapped on his elbow in a rapid cadence. “And?”

“And I should have left. I knew it then, and I know it now. I was stupid, but I had this story, I’d noticed the discrepancies in my research but I was having trouble getting the confirmation. The opportunity was handed to me on a silver platter.”

“And you just gobbled it up.”

She wrinkled her nose at his snide tone and lowered her gaze to the ground. “I did. Ambition won over common sense, over my heart.”

“Was it worth the cost?”

“I…”

“You got your dream job, everything you wanted.”

“Not everything, and no—”

His cell phones ringtone pealed across the empty ceremony, loud enough to wake the dead. She jumped back, then spun to turn her back on him in an attempt to rid herself of the pesky tears. He sighed and the ringer cut off, and his warm voice took over. “Yeah?”

Felicity rubbed her arms and tried to brace for the worst.

“I figured. I’ll be back in a few.”

She turned around to face his shadowed countenance. “Work.”

“Cops are there to search the office. Didn’t take them any time to get warrants.”

“You’d better go. We’re done.”

“Guess we are.”

Never Say Never

9 years ago when Molly was born I left the banking industry.

I have said many times in the span of nine years – NEVER AGAIN.

file1271306993571There would never, ever be another day you would see me behind a teller window.

Well, you know what they say…

Never say never.

Because here I am again.

Sitting behind a teller window.

The hours are perfect (or will be when my schedule goes to what it’s supposed to be next month).

The pay is excellent (especially for PT).

And…it helps us breathe again, financially speaking.

We’re not rolling in the dough, but we can breathe.

The most surprising thing?

I don’t hate it.

With a maximum of 15 hours a week (and a likelihood of only 2 days/week tops in a couple of months)…I’m not there enough to hate it. I like the people I work with, and have worked with one of them before (I actually trained her in my old branch).

Now if only the kids would go back to school…maybe I’d get some of my other job done. You know, this writing gig
