Teachers Make All The Difference

teachersWhen I was really young, I loved school for all of its aspects.  I loved to learn, I enjoyed going every day, I even looked forward to the end of summer. My brother thought I was insane, but I didn’t care. I loved the new year, the new books, the new teachers and new students. The only subject I dreaded was PE, because I hated sports, etc.

As I got older and my social life took a huge nose dive, I still loved learning, but the individual teachers began to make a much larger impact on me. I began to appreciate them for what they did, and how they treated me, they were the beacon in the chaos of teenage drama. Teachers became the biggest imact on my school life.

One teacher that inspired my writing life (and subsequent career as an author), was an English teacher I had in high school.

Mrs. K.

I’m pretty sure the day I approached her with a question on our writing assignment she wasn’t sure what to make of it.  The assignment was to write on our name, the origin of it, the meaning, etc. You know the assignment, I think we all get it.  I asked if it had to be in third person and follow the usual strict guideline for a non-fiction assignment because I had “an idea.”

When she gave me that ok to take the chance, I’m sure she didn’t know how much it would impact my entire future writing life.  I ended up turning the assignment, which had become a creative assignment written as a newspaper article by my great-granddaughter (who shared my name).

I got an A.

And never looked at “standards” the same way again. I approach everything from a sideways slant now. I ignore genres and write crazy stories and plots and don’t ever look back.  All thanks to Mrs. K’s simple “yes” and encouragement.

These days I look at teachers differently.  With my kids and their own unique personalities, I’m always looking for the one that’s going to have the most impact. How they’re going to turn around a difficulty or face a challenge.  I’m mostly looking for one that, despite their insane schedule, take the time to know what my children are about.  We’ve had some amazing years, and some rough ones, and I’m so happy for each step forward my kids take thank to a teachers impact.

TEACHKennedy wants to be a teacher.

I couldn’t be prouder of this dream and I encourage it EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.  Teachers impact the lives of so many children, they make the difference between a love of learning and the desire to avoid school.

I know that the pool of teachers for schools to use is dwindling as people choose different careers and even fewer go to college.  I see first hand that within the next 10 years 65% of America’s current teachers will retire – because every year in my kids school several teachers leave or retire.

I think Kennedy’s dream of being a teacher is the best dream there is. I want her to achieve it and hope she does.

On September 6th 8PM EST, TEACH will air on CBS. Brought to us by Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim, it explores education in America today and asks what it takes to be a good teacher today. I know I’ll be watching, and have my future teacher at my side.

What about you? Did you have a teacher that impacted your life? Share your story. Visit the TEACH website to learn about the four awesome teachers highlighted in the documentary and

A Moment 25 Years in the Making

*I’m totally re-exposing my nerd status with this post, but I don’t care one bit.

NKOTBWhen I was 12 years old, I was one of those girls…

With New Kids on the Block posters taped ALL over my walls.  The pictures ripped out of magazines, the buttons, all of it.

One thing I never got to do that I always wanted to, was go to a concert.

Last night (thanks to the help of a twitter contest from Bohlsen Group) I got to achieve that life-long teenage dream.

Totally bucket list worthy…and so much fun.

Of course, it helped to go with a fellow big fan – Heather…who was my date since I didn’t wish to torture my poor husband.

Indianapolis was the last stop on the package tour, so we got to see BoyzIIMen and 98* (98-who? The crowd thinned out at that point for bathroom breaks, etc…both Heather & I had trouble recognizing anything beyond 1 song, I think).

The sound quality wasn’t very good (I even had trouble recognizing very well-known NKOTB songs sometimes)…but still, just being there and being able to clearly see these men on stage was amazing…

And I have to say – they have gotten BETTER with age. I’ve always had a weak spot for Joe Mac…but now? He’s totally on my list (sorry, Hugh Jackman, you are no longer the sole person on ‘the list’).

My 12 year old self is so happy with my adult self.  Finally achieving a silly dream that still just made my year. Seriously.

One of the best concerts I have ever been to.

Bar none.

(my 12 year old self says it IS the best ever…she’s a bit biased)

Back to School – Already?

leavesThe weather is still in the 90’s.

The sun is still shining more days than it’s not.

But school starts in just 3 weeks here.

Right behind that is fall.

The summer is well past half over.

2013 is over half over.

Where did the time go?

I’m shopping for school supplies when just yesterday we were starting our summer reading lists.

Just don’t mention Christmas yet.

My heart can’t handle it.

It’s in the genes…

IMG_20130715_012247This past school year, Kennedy was fortunate to have a pretty awesome teacher.

Among the many things she did to make the year amazing…

<—this took the cake.

She had the whole class work together. They composed a theme, and then they each wrote stories and illustrated them.

Then she had it published into a book.

Not only did it give the kids something to be proud of.

Not only did it make them interested in reading something.

It lit a fire in my baby girl.

She wants to be published before she graduates high school.

“Like you, Mom,” she says with a smile.

I love that.

I’m so proud of her and the imaginative story she wrote.

I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Time Capsules and Old Age

timecapsuleMost days I’m good with my age.

I’ve done things in the past couple of years that make me realize I’m in my prime. I have a good life now, and I’m happy and fine with where I’m at.

Then the baby of the family brings home a time capsule on her last day of school set to be opened at graduation.

And I see the date.

2024

And I realize…

That’s 30 years after I graduated.

Now…

I feel old.

My youngest will graduate almost 30 years to the day after I did.

The Road Trip Challenge – Kids, or Hubby? #CleverGirlsForKiaJune

_MG_1427We don’t road trip too often in this family.

You’d think maybe it was because the challenge of entertaining three children of various ages was tough.

Or because on her first road trip, Molly literally cried the entire 9 hour trip.

All 526 miles.

Non-stop.

Never sleeping.

Just…Crying.

You’d think that was the reason.

Or the regular stops for the bathroom.

Or the frequent cries of boredom.

Why on earth don’t they play car games like I used to?

Or maybe the gas money.

These days that one hurts.

Still, is it any of those things?

Nope…it’s…

IMG_4708This guy—>

The loving husband.

Molly gets her wonderful car trip joy from him.

More than an hour in the car and poor Erik struggles to remain calm.

Go over three hours and he’s in trouble.

So we have to figure out the best way to run.

Especially since road trips are so much easier than flights.

*~*

It took a bit of finagling, but we found the secret formula.

For the kids, it’s a good DVD player, and lots of movies.

The boy gets his tablet.

A huge supply of homemade trail mix.

For Erik?

Comfort and lots of space to stretch out and just fall asleep.

Even if it means three rows of seats, the teen next to me, and Erik fast asleep in the very-way-back by himself.

It’s a magic combination.

A normal care doesn’t cut it…so we’re on the lookout for something better.

We’ve got our eye on a Kia.

I like the Sedona, but Erik is anti-minivan…so he’d rather have the Sorento (and I’m apt to let him).

So long as it’s got a third seat, I’m a happy camper.
