Are you a foodie?

Are you a wanna-be-foodie?

Do you love watching the cooking shows – even better, the cooking competition shows?

Celebrate Earth Day Free in #Indy

EarthDayIndianaMy kids in school every year learn something about Earth Day.

Most often, I’m brought home acres of paper about the importance of recycling (which I find ironic), and usually a planted seed of some form.

It never feels like enough.

This year there is a great event we plan on attending.

Earth Day Indiana is on April 27th from 11AM-4PM at White River State Park.

It’s FREE.

Did you hear that part?

FREE.

Over 130 exhibits from cleaner fuel to wildlife protection will span the event. With all of that, there has to be something that will suit everyone in your family.

One of the proud sponsors of the event – Indiana’s Family of Farmers – will have two booths at the event.

The ever-popular “Wheel of Ag” encourages visitors to learn more about how Indiana’s farm families work hard on their farms to be good stewards of our land.  A variety of farm families from across the state will be on hand to answer questions about their farms.

Then, in the Children’s Tent, IFOF will help kids plant popcorn in biodegradable CowPots to celebrate the “Year of Popcorn” at the Indiana State Fair.  How fun is that?  I know my girls will be totally excited to plant popcorn!

So if you’re in Indy, pack up the family and head out for the event.  There’s going to be so much to do, you’ll be disappointed when the day is over.

*Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by the IFOF.  As an IFOF Ambassador I receive compensation for this post.  As always, my opinions are quite certainly my own as I would only willingly trade in my true thoughts for about a gazillion dollars and a private island supplied with wifi, a stocked library, and my own personal plastic surgeon (so my lazy butt wouldn’t have to work or diet for that better body I dream of). I can promise, none of that was supplied in this case.

Harvesting Joy…and Pie

[flickr id=”5075549323″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”left”]Fall is my favorite season.  I might be partial to summer because that’s when I was born – but it gets too hot (especially here in Indiana) and far too humid and I don’t have a pool anymore.

Besides – fall has all the gorgeous color, brief though it may be.

Fall is the season I start to bake.  I start making Christmas cookies early & freeze them – but I also start baking bread.  And pie. And anything else I can concoct.  My family loves the influx of fresh food baked in warm oven.  Only thing I wish for at this time of year is a lot more counter space.

Fall is also the season that the local farmers have the corn mazes, apple picking, pumpkin picking, and fall festivals.  There is so much to do at this time of year – and my favorite is the apples.  Apple pie and applesauce adorn our table regularly in the fall.

There really is no better season.

DigIN = Indiana + Food + Beer + You? {Giveaway}

I’ve taken to calling myself the Reluctant Hoosier because when I first moved here my freshman year of high school I loudly proclaimed then, and for years to follow, that I would never ever be a Hoosier.

In my old(er) age I’m softening to the Hoosier State. With every new thing I learn about the state, the more I come to love it.

Like the sheer number of food and livestock grown and produced right here in Indiana.  It’s staggering, and it makes me proud that so many farmers are working hard to keep our nation fed with healthy meat and produce.

DigIN is a great way to meet some of the farmers, and many of the local businesses that not only run locally, but buy locally.

Indiana Family of Farmers is playing chef at the event and wants to give you TWO tickets to come see (and taste) the Heartland on August 26, 2012 at White River State Park.

I’m going to make it even easier than usual to win, just two ways to enter.

  1. Visit the DigIN site and leave a comment here telling me what part of the Event you’d like to “dig in” to.
  2. Tweet about my giveaway w/ a tag to me (@sadiecass) and leave a comment here saying you did so.

Giveaway ends on Tuesday, August 14 at 10:59PM.  Winner will be contacted first thing August 15th & will have 24 hours to reply or I will pick another winner.

Summer Means Great Neighbors – Chilling & Grilling

It’s safe to say that I’ve mentioned a few times before how much I love my neighborhood. It reminds me of a neighborhood I grew up in when I lived in Buffalo.  We all know each other, our kids all know each other, we watch out for each others families and homes.  There isn’t a weekend that goes by that you can’t find a group of neighbors gathered at someones house.  This stands true through spring, summer, fall, and into the mildest of winter weather.

One surefire way to get a group over your house is to get out the grill.  Usually when we plan on cooking out, we expect to end up inviting at least two of our neighbors to join in the fun.  Hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks, chicken – you name it we grill it.  Someone is bound to bring mac & cheese (because you can’t have any food gathering without that) – and of course  type of salad.  Before you know it, our deck table is absolutely overflowing with food and our deck is overflowing with neighbors.

Usually after the kids settle for ice pops. You know, the stick-pops of juice you get at the local supermarket on the cheap. Every freezer in the neighborhood is jammed full of them.

This year I’m bringing something new and fun to the party.

A [amazon_link id=”B003U9ZCRO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Quick Pop[/amazon_link] bar.  Make a base of their yummy vanilla yogurt pop and lay out the fruits and chocolate shell.  In minutes the kids can have a yummy popsicle they made themselves – and it’s not just sugar water.  Fruit’s involved which helps with the healthy points.

Yup, this year my Quick Pops will bring all the neighbors to the yard 😉
