The Rough Summer – Friday Feels

modelMolly had a stellar year at school this year. Top notch, best on record.

Her grades were through the roof awesome, she jumped ahead in math and managed to get an angle on language arts and push forward.

Life was pretty good.

Then, came the end of that.

Fresh off the bus on the last day of school the first thing she said was, “I want to go back to school.”

See, Molly doesn’t handle change well at all.

She doesn’t handle the loss of a routine well.

So despite the leaps and bounds made during the school year, we have had a very difficult summer.

Molly is struggling.

Not sleeping on several occasions (like, at all).

Behavioral issues, despite taking her medicine nearly every day.

Anger, silence, uncontrollable laughing.

Enough to concern us.

And enough to make us look forward to the start of school in a few weeks.

I hate seeing her struggle and not knowing what to do for her.

I can only hope that the return to a routine and school, where she loves to be, will bring her back into focus.

Now if I could just get over the fact that she’s going into middle school….

Wordy Wednesday – What I’m Reading

I’ve been on a real reading streak in 2016, with plans for more reading coming up. Of course, that’s when I find time in between family, friends and writing. I still haven’t quite figured out how I’ve read 40+ books this year, but there you have it.

So, here’s some of what I’ve been reading, and what I’m reading coming up.

What I’ve Read

incarnation-9781439190357_hrIncarnation – it’s a different take on the story of Lucy Weston, the supposedly wanton creation of Dracula. Set in a steampunk victorian era London, the atmosphere is dark and dreary, perfect for a vampire tale.

I don’t usually read vampire books (anymore), but I got this based on the gorgeous cover and the word ‘steampunk’. I’m so glad I did. I loved the somber feel of it, the character of Lucy portrayed here and the story of how she came to be what she was, and the whys. There was a hint of romance, but it wasn’t your typical lovey-dovey-goo-eyed romance in any fashion and it didn’t end as expected that way, either.

shadow-and-bone_hi-resShadow & Bone – Again, the gorgeous covers swayed me, along with a few good reviews from people I knew. I honestly didn’t have much faith when I picked up the book that I would like it, but before I knew it I was swept up and read it in no time. I’m honestly afraid to pick up the next book because I fear it won’t be as good as enjoyable as the first.

I had moments where I wanted to throttle the main character, and others where I wanted to hug her. She was thrown into a world she didn’t understand and wasn’t able to handle it. I really do want to know what happens next. I plan on getting around to the second book soon. Really, I do 😉

Paper-Magician-RD-3-fullsizeThe Paper Magician – I have been eyeing this book for ages and ages, never pulling the trigger on a purchase. So when I suddenly remembered that Amazon had it’s “Borrow one book a month” policy for Prime users I went in and snatched this up.

Ceony is a fun, strong, heroine. I like her, even though the love story at first seemed far too easy before it got really difficult and actually made sense. Once you’ve been where Ceony goes, you can’t help but know a person. By the end I was 100% behind the whole kit and kaboodle and immediately turned around and borrowed the next book in the series.

What I’m Reading

wicked_lovely_book_cover_01Wicked Lovely – I just picked it up, and I’m not far enough in to have an opinion quite yet.  The world building is strong, but I can already see the dreaded triangle forming into place. It would be a shame if I don’t care for it because I have the entire series sitting on my shelf waiting for me. If I don’t like it that’ll be a whole lot heading back to the bookstore for sale. Although that’ll free up space on my shelf for other stuff. 😉

harry-potter-goblet-of-fire-new-cover-630Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – The little one and I are still going strong in this book. We’ve finally passed the halfway point and we’re coming into the home stretch. The Yule Ball is complete, and Harry’s about to discover the secret of the egg.

It’s no longer an every single night thing, but we’re still plugging away. Of course, being halfway through the fourth book means we’re halfway through the series. Really loving reading it with her, even though I know she’s skipping ahead and reading her favorite parts of later books 😉

What I’m Reading Next

81LN+EsvHVL._SL1500_The Glass Magician – I’m waiting until I know I can borrow the next book after it to start this one. I’m really curious what’s going to happen, because I know Ceony has more to her than we realized. I guessed as much in the first book. I’m also curious what will happen as her and Emery continue to get closer together.

Also, there appears to be a new big bad in this one and I’m really interested to see what they’re like, if they’re who I think they are and where it’ll head. So much curiosity. I can’t wait to start (will be super soon)

The-Magicians-Book-Cover-e1317909429117The Magicians – I’m supposed to be reading this RIGHT NOW for my book club. Clearly I’m behind as I just finished Junes book a week back (not any of the above).  I’m curious about it for sure, but don’t have it in my hand yet. Just put in a request for it at the library so I’m probably going to be starting it really soon.

95% of times books don’t live up to their hype for me, so I’m hoping this one is in the 5%. I’d really like to enjoy a book assigned by book club for once.

And that’s where I’m at for now. More books coming in the near-future I’m sure. Here’s hoping I get through them all quick. 😀

Wordy Wednesday

Sunday Snapshots – After The Storm Pt. 1

NYC (2) We had a heck of a storm system blow through Indiana.  While my house suffered with some flooding in our crawl space, I was able to get out and snap a few good pictures of the aftermath.

A walk in the park and some cleanup around the house found me a few good shots that I’m happy with.

Enough shots that this is going to spread out over a couple of weeks, I think.

Storm drain.

Friday Feels – Stop Time, It’s Moving Too Fast

When I was growing up I wanted nothing more than to be older.

I wished away every year, wanting to be a little older so I could do one thing or another.

So I could stop being a baby.

Untitled design (1)Nowadays time is flying by way too fast. I blink and half a year is gone. I take a nap and it’s been almost a year since we went to Disney.

I take a deep breath and my baby boy is not just a teenager, but an Eagle Scout destined to graduate in just a heartbeat.

Because a heartbeat is all it’s going to take.

A heartbeat and the girls are teens.

A heartbeat more and they are grown.

I want to put a pin in so many moments.

Hold onto them tight and let them pass slower.

Meanwhile my girls are wishing their lives away as I once did.

“I can’t wait for school to start” – just days after the last day of school.

“I can’t wait until I can drive.”

“I wish I was seventeen.”

“I wish…”

“I wish…”

I wish it would stop.

For just a few minutes.

To let me breathe it in.

To make this one heartbeat last a few minutes longer.

Or a lifetime.

Wordy Wednesday – Writing Sample – Consumed

THE NEW YOU (1)This piece is actually one I wrote a few years back for a 100 word challenge.

The prompt for this challenge was “Consumed”.

It only seemed natural that I would write about…well, writing.

*~*

When the story creeps deep into your psyche.

When the words flow forth like beer from the tap.

when the characters whisper in your ear, or scream in your head. Demanding to be heard. For you to share the story they have to tell.

When they occupy your every thought. Seep into your dreams. Fill your spare moments with ideas and counterpoints.

That is your drug.

The high of the perfect scene. The funniest line that sent you laughing after it spilled from your keyboard. The tears shed at shared loss or pain.

You are addicted.

You are consumed.

I’ve been digging through old files and finding things I wrote ages ago. I’m having fun digging these old pieces out, so you’ll probably see a few more pieces in coming months.

Top Ten Tuesday – What I Want for My Birthday

Copy of Top 10 Favorite Books (1)My birthday is coming up.

Actually, my birthday is THIS Saturday.  What?  Where in heck did this year go?

Last year I had a pretty darn good birthday. Come to think of it, the past few years have been pretty good all around.

This year I know I won’t get everything on my list – I might only get one, but I have a feeling it will still be a good one (with the exception of having to work on my birthday…that sort of sucks).

1. Tattoo #2 – On my 35th birthday I got my first tattoo.  I wish this year I could get #2. I have several in mind and it’s all a $ issue as to what comes next and when.

2. Purple Hair – Something else I got a few years back. I had purple streaks in my hair. I want them back something fierce. This may just be one thing I actually get. 🙂

3. Lagoonafire – Yup, this is a Monster High doll. Both my girls have her, but I want her for my personal shelf.

4. Harry Potter Bracelet – A lovely little bracelet I’ve been eying at Amazon. It’s a pretty, and subtle, way to wear my HP love.

5. An Amazon Gift Card – Any size’ll do. Seriously, I’ll take them all.

6. MH Boo York Luna Mothews – What can I say? I’m a sucker for a Monster High doll. Any will do, but this is one I’m totally digging. I love her.

7. Half Price Book Gift Card – This store is my ultimate weakness. Oh my, if I had even more reasons to add to my shelves? Um, yes please.

8. My new 2016 Planner – It takes a few weeks to get in anyway…and I’m already looking forward to getting my new planner for next year. Plum Paper is my favorite. 🙂

9. A New Mattress – I know, it’s stupidly sensible…but mine is old and it hurts my back to sleep in it. I need something much much better.

10. MH Freak du Chic Gooliope Jellington – Last one on the list…but again, she’s so pretty.

And that’s it. I’m pretty simple this year…I can’t even think of an honorable mention unless it’s other Monster High dolls. Books and dolls make me happy. 🙂  Hair would make me thrilled. The Tattoo would make me estatic.
