Halloween, a new job, gorgeous sunrises and lack of time led to a hectic lead up to my Scavenger Hunt items!

2. Purple
A box of new crayons! Now they’re all pointy, lined up in order, bright and perfect. Soon they’ll be a bunch of ground down, rounded, indistinguishable stumps, missing their wrappers and smudged with other colors. Sometimes life seems unbearably tragic. ~Bill Watterson
[flickr id=”6317131944″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]
*There is no purple anymore. The “purple” crayon is called violet. Why is there no purple anymore? Who needs fancy names in crayons?

Knitting is very conducive to thought. It is nice to knit a while, put down the needles, write a while, then take up the sock again. ~Dorothy Day

3. In Disguise

[flickr id=”6316611851″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]
Tell: I call them Thing 1 and Thing 2 as well.  Of course, Thing 1 is the older of the two.  They already had the t-shirts & I just knew this would make a quick & cheap costume idea. The girls had a blast.

Weekly Winners – Nature Wins Edition

All taken w/ Canon Rebel XS.

A couple selections might be a stretch. I was swamped this week & didn’t get as many pictures as maybe I could have. Also, it got COLD this week. It didn’t make me excited to get out. Then again – at least it didn’t snow here!

1. Macro/Close-up
Green little vaulter, in the sunny grass, Catching your heart up at the feel of June, Sole noise that’s heard amidst the lazy noon, When ev’n the bees lag at the summoning brass.

4. Cover

Tell: It’s what we use to cover our little imperfections. Makeup. I wanted to do something different than a dead on shot – enter my trusty mirror & the reflection. Ordinary objects take on new life.

5. The Tree
For a tree to become tall it must grow tough roots among the rocks. ~Friedrich Nietzsche

Autumn is like a second spring where every leaf is a flower. ~Albert Camus
[flickr id=”6293824018″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

A Simple Thing:
One of our prompts this week was “The Tree.” It was the one above all the others that spoke to me. I love getting trees caught in the lens of my camera. Every shot is different in so many ways. Today’s simple thing is a shot of our tree in the front yard that has some moss growing on it’s north face. I got a good close up shot of the bark. Textural, abstract.

Weekly Winners – The Cold and the Hot Edition

All taken w/ Canon Rebel XS.

As the lead-in states it was a see-saw week.  Very cold temperatures to start, ending with a gorgeous couple of days. We took advantage of one of the days to go to the zoo.  You’ll have to go to my Flickr account to see ALL of those pics – only a couple are here.

1. Words
Words are things; and a small drop of ink,
Falling like dew upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.
~Lord Byron (Don Juan)

2. Under
I’m eighteen years behind in my ironing. ~Phyllis Diller
[flickr id=”6270890265″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]
It’s my ironing board. Yup. Figured it would make for some interesting lines and shadows. Only light is daylight and a flashlight used to cast shadows for fun.

3. Orange
Orange is the happiest color. ~Frank Sinatra
[flickr id=”6270889805″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

We fancy men are individuals; so are pumpkins; but every pumpkin in the field goes through every point of pumpkin history. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
[flickr id=”6270889887″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

4. Fly
I had a picture of a bird, but I didn’t want to go typical. I loved the jellyfish…floating and soaring through the water on pure instinct alone.
[flickr id=”6270890809″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

Another one for a-typical. A leaping lemur mid-flight. I have a much better one in my archives, but I didn’t want to dig this week.
[flickr id=”6271418304″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

5. Always look on the bright side
The secret of contentment is knowing how to enjoy what you have, and to be able to lose desire for things beyond your reach. ~Lyn Yutang
[flickr id=”6270892247″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

It was cold, dark, and rainy outside – but bright, warm, and cozy inside.
[flickr id=”6271416484″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

A Simple Thing:
I have two simple things this week. I simply could not chose.  First is my girls – who asked me to take a picture of them at the zoo and posed so beautifully for me.  The second is a zebra picture I took. It’s almost SOOC – I just had to adjust the exposure a tiny bit. Otherwise, no cropping or anything. It makes me so happy at it’s gorgeous simple complexity that I had to add it into my simple things.
[flickr id=”6270891807″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]   [flickr id=”6271419468″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

Weekly Winners – Last Minute Edition

All taken w/ Canon Rebel XS.

I was pretty much elsewhere in my head this week. I got most of these at the absolute last minute…like tonight (Saturday night).  Hoping for a much more creative week next week.

1. Abstract
What is a weed? A plant whose virtures have never been discovered. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Counsel woven into the fabric of real life is wisdom. ~Walter Benjamin
[flickr id=”6248354450″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

2. Round
Music is the harmonious voice of creation; an echo of the invisible world. ~Giuseppe Mazzini
[flickr id=”6248354358″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]
I had a few ideas for round.  My headphones were my favorite.  I wear them all the time when I’m writing. They’re also my salvation when hubby is watching horrible scary movies.

I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars. ~Og Mandino
[flickr id=”6247831577″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]
Our end table lamp is so perfectly round I had to use it. I wish I’d been able to get my camera high enough to get the outer ring too.  But I love that the bulb is a circle within the circle of the lampshade.

Photography love...

3. Fire
If you don’t light fires, smoke won’t get in your eyes. ~German Proverb
[flickr id=”6247831533″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

From a little spark may burst a flame. ~Dante Alighieri
[flickr id=”6248354478″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

4. Faces in Unusual Places
This is another one I struggled with. Then tonight in one of her fits, Angel decided to hide her face IN the couch. It hit me, that was a face in an unusual place. Yeah, it’s a stretch, but really…I had nothing.
[flickr id=”6247831361″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

5. Stars
Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars. ~Henry Van Dyke
[flickr id=”6248354390″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

When it is darkest, men see stars. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
[flickr id=”6248354420″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

A Simple Thing:
My simple thing for this week is my Riley. The girls is a future model. The camera loves her, and every time it’s pointed even close to her direction, she posing. This was at Brandon’s last cross country meet. She saw me with the camera and it was five minutes of constant motion, posing and turning, and posing again.

Weekly Winners – Slow Days & Photo Walks

All taken w/ Canon Rebel XS.

Yet another crazy week w/ sick kids everywhere. Still, I had little fun with a couple of the Scavenger Hunt Prompts.

1. Landscape
Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree. ~Emily Bronte
[flickr id=”6224433289″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

Happiness is a Swedish sunset; it is there for all, but most of us look the other way and lose it. ~Mark Twain

Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower. ~Albert Camus
[flickr id=”6224433595″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

2. Complementary/Triadic Color
[flickr id=”6224432245″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

I really struggled with this one.  Didn’t help that I was trapped inside for most of the day & the one clear cut option I did see when I was out…well, I would have had to stop in a not-so-lovely part of town.  Down to the wire I saw these berries & leaves…and while they push the prompt a little on the “almost” side…it’s close enough for me.

3. Black & White
[flickr id=”6224431489″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]
My sneakers. They aren’t purely B&W so I edited it to B&W. I love the lines of them, and had to use them for a shot this week.

[flickr id=”6224951396″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]
This is the umbrella I bought for my hubs so he didn’t have to deal w/ my “Dunkin’ Donuts” umbrella. I saw it on our wall surrounded by tons of color, peeled away the color and snapped this stark B&W pic.

4. Food
My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it’s on your plate. ~Thornton Wilder

[flickr id=”6224951596″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

Ice cream is exquisite. What a pity it isn’t illegal.  ~Voltaire
[flickr id=”6224951750″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

5. Blank Space
A word is a bud attempting to become a twig. How can one not dream while writing? It is the pen which dreams. The blank page gives the right to dream. ~Gaston Bachelard

[flickr id=”6224431703″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

We do not raise our hands to the void for things beyond hope. ~Rabindranath Tagor
[flickr id=”6224951988″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

A Simple Thing:
My simple thing for this week is this photo. Brandon and I went on the annual photo walk at our local nature park.  While we were nearing the end, I saw this small seedling tree in the crevice of a larger tree, and the moss on it just added something else.  The picture came out just how I’d hoped, and it’s SOOC. It’s a simple thing, so small…but so lovely.

Weekly Winners – Speak Edition

All taken w/ Canon Rebel XS.

Yet another crazy week w/ sick kids everywhere. Still, I had little fun with a couple of the Scavenger Hunt Prompts.

1. Inspired by a Book or Movie

Push the button! ~Woody
[flickr id=”6202453403″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

This week was banned books week.  I was shocked to see on the books listed for 2011 the book “Speak.”  It’s a stunning novel. I did this picture in honor of it.  Surprisingly it’s my favorite this week…and I never say that about a self portrait.

I have survived. I am here. Confused, screwed up, but here. So, how can I find my way? Is there a chain saw of the soul, an ax I can take to my memories or fears? ~Melinda Sordino (Speak – Laurie Halse Anderson)
[flickr id=”6202967832″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

2. Brown
[flickr id=”6202967384″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

I could think of no better way to capture brown than with these brown badges of honor on my son’s uniform. Being in scouts has made him a better young man.

[flickr id=”6202967016″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

5. Linger

The song is ended, but the melody lingers on. ~Irving Berlin
[flickr id=”6202967526″ thumbnail=”medium” overlay=”true” size=”small” group=”” align=”center”]

A Simple Thing:
Another linkup I found that fit w/ a picture I took & loved this week, but didn’t fit into the SHS theme.  It’s the “Simple Things” link up over at Simple as That.  Every week, if I can, I like to buy the flowers in the half-off bin at Krogers. They still have life in them, and they don’t hurt my wallet as much.  This flower burst open part way through the week & has kept us all smiling with its vibrant beauty.
