100 Words – Reset

It’s been a while since I joined the word nerds on the weekly challenge. I’m so happy to be back among old friends, I hope you enjoy my latest piece inspired by the prompt – Reset. Click on the Word Challenge image to find more participants 100 words!

Reset

Thin red line grants entrance.

One finger, then two widen the split.

I peel back the layers.

The pool of red grows, blocking my view.

I scoop it out into any receptacle, onto the floor, wherever it’s out of my way.

Organs shift under my grasping fingers, oozing and giving way to the pressure of my forward course.

Find the root cause.

Find the source of the bleeding.

Clamp a vein, stitch it closed.

Before it’s too late.

The bleeding slows, but not enough.

I must work fast.

Faster than this.

There is no reset button on a human life.

100 Words – Satisfied

It’s never ending.

More. Better. Bigger. Nicer.

What’s in front of us. What’s right here. It’s never enough.

Someone else always has something better. Something nicer. Something WE want.

How do they do it when we struggle so much? How did they get that new car? How come we never get ahead?

Every time we get a toe-hold, the rocks crumble to dust and we fall again.

Stuck between not enough, and without anything.

Then we turn.

See their bright faces.

The smiles and sparkling eyes.

Asking us to play. To hug. To love.

Then. Only then.

We are satisfied.

For the first time ever, I wrote this to its conclusion…stopped…hit word count…and it was 100 words exactly. Without trying, editing or effort. Now I am the one satisfied 😉

100 Words – Occupy

When the story creeps deep into your psyche.

When the words flow forth like beer from the tap.

When the characters whisper in your ear, or scream in your head.  Demanding to be heard. For you to share the story they have to tell.

When they occupy your every thought.  Seep into your dreams.  Fill your spare moments with ideas and counterpoints.

That is your drug.

The high of the perfect scene.  The funniest line that sent you laughing after it spilled from your keyboard.  The tears shed at a shared loss or pain.

You are addicted.

You are consumed.

I started this post as one thing, and then realized it fit perfectly into the 100 words Challenge for this week.  The word was Occupy.  This is about where I’ve been for the past few weeks.  I was even working solely on the back story for my new novel (tentatively titled The Tribe) I haven’t been able to come up for air.  I love my new characters as much as I have loved working with Jane and Cole in Changing Tracks. It’s been a wild ride so far and I’m just getting started.

100 Words – Storm

I haven’t done much writing this week after a sort of boom last week. Not for lack of inspiration, but instead a lack of energy.  I’m trying to push through and write despite the lacking energy.  So, back to the challenges…

The prompt word for the 100 Word challenge was Storm.  I had several flashes of inspiration, from weathering the storm to a storm front to a total blank on further ideas. When I sat down to write this morning what finally hit was the main character in the story I’m world building for.  This book is tentatively called “The Tribe” (I know for a fact it’s not a final title, it’s just to tide me over until I get a better one).

The main characters name is Nirvelli.  She’s been through a lot, and this short 100 words is inspired by her and the start of the trials of her life.

One of these days the 100 words will inspire something a little more light-hearted…maybe.

Around her everyone went about their business.  To them nothing had changed, not even her.

They didn’t know the depth of evil roiling in her soul.  The storming emotions threatening to erupt.

It would come out in bursts and fits, put off as teen rebellion.

They didn’t know the truth of her pain.

They would never know.

Because evil begets evil. She caused this, she had to have. It was her fault. The Spirits punished her for sins yet to be made. It was karma. She was marked for life.

Her soul already dead.

Opening her to a new Hell.

100 Words – Depth

And after far too long a delay I’m back into the 100 Words challenge. It feels good to be using my writing blog again. Writing Challenges will be more frequent I hope. As well as actual blog posts as I begin the writing process again with some new novels – and continue the editing process on the old ones.

Now, onto the challenge for this week. The prompt word was Depth and the first thing it triggered was the phrase ‘depths of madness’…and so I ran with it to bring about this submission.

All that’s left is a thin strand.

All that ties me to the now.

You are not enough to keep me here, you never were.

You can’t turn off the chaos all around.

Tomorrow the sun won’t rise.

Tomorrow I may not either.

Yesterday is dead and gone.

Yesterday will never return.

Death couldn’t save me.

Death runs from me.

Meant for suffering.

Meant for damnation.

Don’t you hear them too?

Don’t you even care?

Down I sink into the dark.

Down into the depths of madness.

Never will I see the light again.

Never to be saved from me.

100 Words – Honor

It was over a decade ago. What did it matter now?

Long buried secret was hurting no one but her. To reveal it would complicate so much.

But she was tired of carrying it. It made her feel ashamed. Weak.

Hiding in a shell like she always had.

The truth will set you free.

But what honor is there in causing turmoil to rid yourself of burden? One that might be best born alone.

Silence has its price too.

There is no easy answer.  No easy out.

Not for the good. Not for the wicked.

Only your heart can lead.
