I’m back with my travelling wild west show story, Masked Hearts.

Skipping ahead again just a few lines. Roy is comforting Minnie and reveals that no one missed what Rawlins and Silas were doing:

Roy spoke in hushed tones. “But no matter about that. Max doesn’t like what Rawlins is doing to you. Or what he plans to do to you.”

“You heard?”

“We all heard.” His finger ran along her temple. “Tent walls aren’t thick and our tent’s right there.”

Minnie Woodward lives a lie. After barely surviving the Bear River Massacre she’s lived in the white world of her guardian Mister Rawlins, her life debt keeping her tied there. The last thing she needs is Roy’s attempts to gain her favor. Her fate’s sealed. She’s never believed in hope, and not even Roy can make her start.

Roy Ornum saves Minnie every night in the traveling Wild West show. The job he took to break his gambling habit brought him a new addiction – her. He knows she doesn’t want to be rescued, but maybe he does. She’s the key to a past he lost, one he wants to find again.

As the two grow closer old wounds are reopened and their burgeoning trust is shattered. When lives hang in the balance of their choices they’ll need to work together. Otherwise everything will be lost before hope can be found.

I’m skipping ahead a bit. To see just what Silas and Mister were doing, you’ll have to pick up the book itself 😉  However, I am going to show you the aftermath. Rawlins has just made his final warning to Minnie. Once he has finally left the tent, Minnie allows herself to react:

Her whole body jerked with the wrench of her stomach. With two steps she made it to a bucket and unleashed her stomach contents. She heaved until pain burned up her throat and her stomach was empty.

A cool, damp cloth touched the back of her neck.

She let out a small shriek and spun, taking a swing at whomever was close.

“Minnie.” Roy’s grunt of pain didn’t stop his arms from wrapping around her waist.

We return to the same scene from last week. It’s the middle of the night, and Mister Rawlins has brought a friend to Minnie’s tent. The disgusting Silas is looking Minnie over like a piece of meat, and she has no choice but to obey:

“Untouched you say?” Silas tilted his head, eyes never rising above her chest. “Are you certain?”

“Quite. Not one hand has touched her, has it Minnie?” Mister pinched her arm hard. Despite the smile he wore his eyes were hard as ice.

“No, Mister–not one hand.”

Mister Rawlins has already shot an apple off Minnie’s head as a warning, but he isn’t done with her yet. In the middle of the night, he makes a never-before-seen appearance in her tent, but he isn’t alone:

“This here is Silas. I told him all about you,” The Mister wrapped his hand around her elbow and pulled her off her cot.

The man that ogled her from across the tent didn’t bolster her hope that the night would improve. Short and dark, his eyes skimmed her with a lecherous open leer.

“Drop the sheet,” Silas commanded. The man never heard ‘no’, she could tell just by his attitude. He moved closer, and the lamp lit up weathered and filthy features. The crooked grin displayed yellow rotted teeth he picked at with a toothpick; his nose was bulbous at the end, a distinct twist at the bridge showing he’d been in his fair share of fights.

John & Carl continue to try to help Minnie…but old hurts stand in the way for most of them:

“Stick with your own kind, Minnie. Roy may not be a bastard like Rawlins, but he won’t take care of you, either.” Carl moved closer. “Got it?”

“My own kind? I have none of my own kind,” She wrinkled her nose and got in his face. “You’re Cheyenne; I’m nothing like you.”

“We’re all you have.”

The confrontation with the Cheyenne continues. In her current state, Minnie finds it easy to hold onto her anger. But perhaps John & Carl are trying to help…:

“You can’t even show friendship to your own kind, but you look at a white man like that? I thought you hated white men,” Carl folded his arms across his chest.

“I do,” She did, but Roy had just proved he wasn’t white–not fully; not that she could reveal his secret to them.

“Rawlins offered him your contract for a few games. Are you trying to make it so he’ll do that?” John picked apple pieces off her head, tossing it aside. “Because it would be no better with him, you know that.”

“I don’t want that,” Minnie didn’t look away from Carl’s glare.
