X is for X-Ray #AtZchallenge

KKSo X-ray might not be original, but I don’t care.

Some days I wonder how it is that Kennedy doesn’t glow.

I know the exposure levels are ‘minimal’.

I remember the lectures.

I remember the exposure tags when I worked at the vet’s office years ago.

But Kennedy has had so many x-rays in her short 7 year life.

They started around the time she was a year old.

Some X-rays were because of her lungs, and her eventual diagnosis of CF.

Others were for her hypotonia and the possibility of one leg being shorter than the other.

Or her tibial torsion.

And let’s not forget the reflux…oh, and the dysphagia where she had painful swallowing (which we eventually learned was from her inability to chew properly)…which meant about 5 times drinking and eating barium-laced substances and eating in front of a fluoroscope.

She has spent more time in front of X-rays, CT-scans, fluoroscope’s in her 7 years than I have in my entire life.

I’m seriously surprised she doesn’t glow.

W is for Writing #AtoZchallenge

_MG_0763They are lands of make believe.

Characters that I have created.

Flawed.

Wounded.

Imperfect.

Characters.

Terrible things happen to them, just as terrible things happen in real life. In writing it’s often worse, although you know what is said…

Truth is always strange, stranger than fiction.

The difference is.

In those worlds.

Where chaos reigns.

Where characters are deeply flawed.

I am in control.

Without question, I know there will be resolution.

A happy ever after in my lighter works.

An eerie end in my horrors.

I know the resolution.

Real life – it’s messy and I don’t have all the answers.

So I write to create worlds where I do.

V is for Vanity #AtoZChallenge

vaniyI have never been a vain person.

But as I get older, I find myself wishing I had been at least a little.

Pregnancy changed my skin – I know have spots and bumps on my face I never had before. I don’t like them, because they feel like a foreign object, not a part of the me I know.

Menopause (thanks to an emergency hysterectomy 6 years ago) has taken its toll on my body. I am now no longer the high-metabolism girl with skinny jeans…and I’ve had no luck breaking old habits from those days.

The circles under my eyes, a permanent genetic mark I’ve always had (and Kennedy carries now), have darkened into deep crevices of dark color that require makeup and camera/photo-editing magic to hide.

Still…

In many ways I feel the best I have in my life.  Not about my outward signs, but about me.

I posted last year on my birthday about feeling like I was in the prime of my life.

It still holds true, although it wavered a bit over the long and very cold winter because in winter I tend to hermit myself inside and never, ever, go out.

But now the whether is turning. Events are planned, some lifelong dreams have been met, and I’m ready to set some new goals.

And try some new crazy things to push myself again.

_MG_0758Fear stalks me.

Like a lion stalks its prey.

It inches forward.

Leaps.

Fear that they will get sick.

Fear that I won’t be strong enough.

Finances.

Insurance.

Illness.

Depression.

I’m the silver lining girl.

But sometimes the lion of fear pounces.

On the days I’m smiling my brightest.

Is when most often, it’s devouring me most.

When I wonder how I will go on.

But I do.

The silver lining reappears.

The lion falls back.

And begins to stalk me again.

Celebrate Earth Day Free in #Indy

EarthDayIndianaMy kids in school every year learn something about Earth Day.

Most often, I’m brought home acres of paper about the importance of recycling (which I find ironic), and usually a planted seed of some form.

It never feels like enough.

This year there is a great event we plan on attending.

Earth Day Indiana is on April 27th from 11AM-4PM at White River State Park.

It’s FREE.

Did you hear that part?

FREE.

Over 130 exhibits from cleaner fuel to wildlife protection will span the event. With all of that, there has to be something that will suit everyone in your family.

One of the proud sponsors of the event – Indiana’s Family of Farmers – will have two booths at the event.

The ever-popular “Wheel of Ag” encourages visitors to learn more about how Indiana’s farm families work hard on their farms to be good stewards of our land.  A variety of farm families from across the state will be on hand to answer questions about their farms.

Then, in the Children’s Tent, IFOF will help kids plant popcorn in biodegradable CowPots to celebrate the “Year of Popcorn” at the Indiana State Fair.  How fun is that?  I know my girls will be totally excited to plant popcorn!

So if you’re in Indy, pack up the family and head out for the event.  There’s going to be so much to do, you’ll be disappointed when the day is over.

I can promise, none of that was supplied in this case.
