Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors!
I’m back with my travelling wild west show story, Masked Hearts.
I was surprised (and a little amused) at how many people commented on the chemistry/dynamic between Minnie and Carl…considering Carl is not the hero of the story. So, to help with that, I thought I might show a little of the hero himself, Roy.
This is after the previous scene, when Roy (in character) has charged onstage to ‘rescue’ the ‘fair maiden’ Minnie was made up to look like. The show they’ve just put on takes place in an army camp, so Roy insists on escorting her home for her safety. Minnie is confused and upset by her attraction to the white man that joined their troop some time ago – and his persistence in trying to talk to her doesn’t help. Here she tries to refuse his assistance:
“Makes no difference,” Minnie pushed against him, trying to sit of her own volition. “The moment I change out of this costume and show my true self my virtue is in jeopardy; it’s the only thing the Mister cares to protect.”
“Well, I’m concerned with protecting everything.”
“And I have no need for your concern or protection.”
“So you’ve told me.”
She shoved aside his arm and jumped off the moving horse. After a brief stumble she righted herself and lifted her chin.
“You’re a stubborn woman.”

Minnie Woodward lives a lie. After barely surviving the Bear River Massacre she’s lived in the white world of her guardian Mister Rawlins, her life debt keeping her tied there. The last thing she needs is Roy’s attempts to gain her favor. Her fate’s sealed. She’s never believed in hope, and not even Roy can make her start.
Roy Ornum saves Minnie every night in the traveling Wild West show. The job he took to break his gambling habit brought him a new addiction – her. He knows she doesn’t want to be rescued, but maybe he does. She’s the key to a past he lost, one he wants to find again.
As the two grow closer old wounds are reopened and their burgeoning trust is shattered. When lives hang in the balance of their choices they’ll need to work together. Otherwise everything will be lost before hope can be found.

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors!
I’ve been sharing my contemporary romance for a while, I thought it might be nice to go back in time…to the old west and a travelling wild west show.
Masked Hearts is my oft-neglected stand-alone novel, but every time I bring it up I remember why I enjoyed it.
In this first 8, Minnie is onstage in their wild west show with another native. In life off-stage they take exception to each others behavior:
“You call us a joke?” The fierce warrior brave named Carl snarled in her ear under the speech, taunting her with their familiar argument. He knew onstage was the only time she’d let him close enough for such talk. His foot stomped on her skirt, crushing her bustle and pulling her backward. “At least we don’t act like one of them.”
“You do what you need for your whiskey. I do what I must to survive.” She fought the urge to hit him.

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors!
This will be my last week with Michaela and Tag. I adore them, and clearly you all do as well…but it’s time to share other stories with you…such a shame because we’re just at the meat of the story…but you know what they say – leave ’em wanting more, right?
In this 8, Michaela finally let her new assistant manager run the store for a night. He did really well, and she’d just admitted as much, adding in a hint of praise. This is his reaction:
With every word he’d brightened more, until a beaming smile warmed over half the doubts right out of her cold heart, “So do I get a passing grade?”
She chuckled and shook her head, “This isn’t school.”
“Too bad.”
“What? Why?”
“Because then I could start singing ‘Hot for Teacher’.”
“Oh my God,” She buried her face in her hands, the tingling burn of a blush creeping up from head to toe. “Owen!”
*A little creative editing involved to make the 8.

Michaela O’Keefe is in over her head with her restaurant, The Midway. Her ad for an assistant manager brings Owen “Tag” Montague to her doorstep. With an impeccable resume and dozens of letters of recommendation, she has little choice but to give him a chance. Ten years her junior, Tag sets her long-dead libido humming, but she gave up on love and her instincts on men years ago.
Tag has had a crush on his new boss since his youth, but he’s determined to prove he can do the job. Still, he can’t resist the urge to make her blush down to her toes as often as possible. He knows her rough past in life and love makes it hard to trust, and he’s wary of crossing the line he so desperately wants to.
Just when they manage to figure out how to work and play together, Michaela’s ex does all he can to destroy their budding love. When push comes to shove Michaela’s inability to give Tag the benefit of the doubt might destroy everything.
Learning to trust herself again is the hardest lesson Michaela will ever have to learn – and by the time she does, it may be too late for love.

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors!
So Michaela and the young Tag have found common ground. Is that enough for the two of them?
In this 8, Tag is working on the Nova he spoke of…when Michaela shows up:
“You’ll never manage it that way.” Michaela’s voice shocked both men into jumping.
Tools clanged against cement, and Tag jumped so high, he hit his forehead on the bolt, in the exact spot the wrench had clocked him minutes ago. “Ow, damn it. Son of a—”
Michaela giggled, a foreign sound to Tag’s ears, but so welcome it almost overrode his pain. Almost. “Didn’t mean to scare you guys, I thought you heard me walking in.”

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors!
Went MIA for a couple of weeks, sorry about that. First I went out of town to work, and then took a week to recover from the madness. A couple weeks back, last time I posted…Michaela went and called Owen’s car a “No-Go”.). You all worried about what would happen after she ragged on his car…but you might be surprised. I had to skip a little ahead to show you the cause of her reaction. Michaela speaks first:
“Okay, this isn’t the best picture-I have several much better ones at home.”
Owen rose and turned his chair around to edge closer. Once they were shoulder to shoulder, she showed him the picture. He gasped and snatched the picture from her fingers, “Holy crap.”
“That’s my dad and me, and my baby-I call her Betty.”
“I have never seen her, where do you hide her?” He ran his index finger along the lines of the black Nova in the picture.
“New York winters are assholes to cars, especially beauties like Betty.”
*Tiniest bit of creative editing in place, just a wee bit to fit it into the 8

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors!
Continuing directly from last week. Tag has suggested that he have Michaela check him thoroughly for more oil.
(Once again, this will be continued directly next week):
She managed a laugh to cover the choking lump in her throat and heat the idea sent right to her core. “Cute, real cute. What were you doing, grease monkey?”
“I was at Cal’s working on my Nova.”
This time she did choke on her own laughter, and she blinked a few times. “I’m sorry, did you say a Nova? As in a No-Go?”
Owen stopped examining his arms and his gaze snapped to meet hers, “What did you say?”
